For fans of FX’s Fargo, the new Taylor Sheridan series is exciting for multiple reasons. Billy Bob Thornton, who terrifically played Lorne Malvo in season 1, is the lead of Landman. Thornton plays Tommy Norris, an oil company crisis executive who manages various situations that disrupt the production flow. Meanwhile, Jon Hamm plays Monty Miller, a Texas oil tycoon, and Tommy’s boss. As Fargo fans know well, these actors are phenomenal when paired with sharp dialogue and other talented cast members to share the screen with, and Landman provides both.
Among the best seasons of Fargo, the first run with Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman is still near the top, with Lorne Malvo standing out as maybe the most fascinating character in the entire series. Thornton is a force to be reckoned with on that show, and Jon Hamm’s Sheriff Roy Tillman is one of the few characters to live up to his standards. Jon Hamm’s New Character Is Some Of His Best Work Since Mad Men
Fargo season 5 is a tough role to follow up, but Taylor Sheridan has almost immediately provided Jon Hamm with the perfect replacement show. He’s not quite as prominent in Landman just yet as he was in Fargo, but his character is compelling, and he makes the most of every scene he’s in. Monty Miller seems a bit less evil than Roy Tillman, at least outwardly, but he still fulfills a similar archetype as a powerhouse character who doesn’t bow down to anyone.
Landman is a drama series created and written by Taylor Sheridan and Christian Wallace. Based on the podcast series Boomtown, Landman follows the wealthy oil tycoons and the workers involved in the Texas oil industry., comparing and contrasting their lives while exploring the politics between the two.
