Mike Flanagan is producing a new zombie movie featuring familiar stars from previous horror projects. The best known Mike Flanagan movies and TV shows are all part of the horror genre, including the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep. He also created quite a few popular Netflix horror miniseries including The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, and The Fall of the House of Usher.
Per Deadline, the upcoming zombie action-horror movie Epilogue has cast Kate Siegel and David Dastmalchian in the lead roles. The movie will be produced by Mike Flanagan and directed by The Fall of the House of Usher‘s Michael Fimognari from a screenplay by Luke Barnett and Tanner Thomason, who previously collaborated as co-stars on the Barnett-penned 2020 comedy Faith Based. Read the official synopsis of the movie below:
Set one year after the zombie apocalypse has supposedly come to an end, the film will follow a desperate couple who set out to find a cure for their infected daughter.
Epilogue is being taken to American Film Market next week by The Convent, the group behind Terrifier 3. In addition to Flanagan, who is working through Red Room Pictures, the movie is also being produced by Courtney Petrakis, Brittney McDade, and Broken Road Studios’ Todd Garner.
What This Epilogue News Means
The Zombie Movie Has Reteamed Modern Horror Luminaries
In addition to recently having collaborated as co-stars in the Life of Chuck cast, which saw them both team with Flanagan, Dastmalchian and Siegel are both well-known names in the horror genre already. Siegel has collaborated with Flanagan, who is her husband, on a wide variety of projects including Midnight Mass, The Haunting of Hill House, Hush, and Oculus. Although this is only their second time acting together onscreen, Dastmalchian also brings a long history of horror roles to their collaboration, with one of his most recent roles being the lead in the 2024 hit Late Night with the Devil.
Other horror projects starring David Dastmalchian include
The Boogeyman
,
Bird Box
, and
The Last Voyage of the Demeter
.
Additionally, the movie sees Mike Flanagan expanding his repertoire of terrors. As either a director or a producer, he has been involved in projects that have included a variety of classic horror monsters and villains including vampires, ghosts, demons, and more. However, he has never doubled in a proper zombie movie, so even though his direct involvement with the project is more limited than in those he writes and directs, it could offer some insight into what elements of zombie movies appeal most to the filmmaker.
Our Take On The Epilogue Announcement
The Zombie Movie’s Premise Is Promising
In addition to bringing together a strong group of horror veterans, the premise of the Mike Flanagan project means that it may be a promising addition to the zombie genre. The majority of zombie movies cover the beginning of the apocalypse rather than taking place after the end of the zombie outbreak. One of the only major examples of a project showcasing how tensions and terrors can still occur in a post-zombie world is the well-received BBC Three drama In the Flesh, leaving quite a bit of room for the premise to be explored in Epilogue.
