A potential disaster was narrowly averted on Wednesday in Lagos State when a diesel-laden tanker experienced leakage, spilling its contents onto the road.
In a video obtained by THE WHISTLER, several individuals, identified as scavengers, were seen dangerously scooping the spilt fuel at the scene of the incident.
The tanker accident occurred at the Charity axis, inward Oshodi-Oke, causing a major safety concern for commuters and residents in the area.
Given the highly flammable nature of diesel, the spillage posed a serious risk to lives, property, and infrastructure along the expressway.
However, a swift response from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Lagos Fire and Rescue Service, and other emergency agencies effectively neutralized the threat.
In a statement, LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq confirmed that the affected area was cordoned off to prevent a fire outbreak or further hazards.
“Demonstrating exemplary coordination and urgency, LASTMA officers, in synergy with other emergency response agencies, including the Lagos State Fire Service, promptly converged at the scene. Their rapid intervention facilitated the effective containment and mitigation of the hazardous situation, averting what could have been a major disaster.
“The affected zone was immediately cordoned off to protect lives and property, while LASTMA officials meticulously managed traffic flow to minimize disruptions and ensure the safety of all road users. This coordinated response successfully neutralized the risk of fire outbreaks and environmental degradation,” Adebayo stated.
LASTMA has urged residents to remain calm and patient as efforts to restore normalcy in the affected area continue.
The agency also appealed to motorists to comply with directives from traffic management officers and make use of alternative routes where necessary.
Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, commended the emergency teams for their swift and professional response.
“This incident highlights the indispensable need for strict adherence to traffic regulations and safety protocols by all tanker operators,” Giwa remarked.
“We implore all transport stakeholders to prioritize the safety of both lives and property. The Lagos State Government remains steadfast in its resolve to enforce compliance with all traffic laws to prevent avoidable mishaps.”
