As 2025’s line-up of TV shows continues to take shape, there are plenty of great sci-fi shows on the horizon. This includes some shows which are returning after long waits, like Andor and Severance, and some exciting new concepts, like Alien: Earth and Blade Runner 2099, both of which are bringing huge movie franchises to the small screen for the first time. Sci-fi fans will have a wealth of options to choose from in 2025.
Many of the most exciting shows of 2025 happen to be sci-fi shows, like Stranger Things season 5 and Black Mirror season 7. These shows range from comedies to dark sci-fi horror shows, so there could be something for all fans of the genre to enjoy. Although it’s still too soon for many of these shows to have set release dates, it’s still a relief to see that they have committed to a 2025 release window, since some of them have been away for three years or more.

Apple TV+ doesn’t have as many subscribers as the other major streaming platforms, which means that there are many great shows that deserve more love. For All Mankind is one of these, and it’s more evidence that Apple TV+ is making the most interesting and exciting sci-fi shows on TV. Shortly after season 4, For All Mankind season 5 was confirmed, as well as an intriguing spinoff called Star City.
The writers have stated that the plan has always been to produce about seven seasons.
For All Mankind imagines an alternative history in which the space race never slowed down, and the Russians beat the Americans to the first lunar landing. Each season of For All Mankind leaps forward a decade into the future. If this trend continues, season 5 will take place in the 2010s. The writers have stated that the plan has always been to produce about seven seasons, so things could get even weirder as the timeline moves into the 2020s and beyond.

Invincible (Season 3)
Amazon Prime Video, February 6
After an electric first season, Invincible took a long time to deliver season 2. Fans won’t have to endure a long wait this time round, as season 3 is coming out in February. Invincible is based on the comic book series by Robert Kirkman, and its two seasons so far have produced a bloodier and more violent alternative to most other superhero movies and TV shows. It also has plenty of fun sci-fi concepts to keep things fresh, like cloning, alternate realities and some unique superpowers.
Invincible season 3 will pick up after Mark’s defeat of Angstrom Levy, as he becomes more powerful and more important to Cecil’s plans. He also has issues in his personal life, and his will-they-won’t-they relationship with Eve will likely shape a lot of season 3. The trailer shows that Cecil could become season 3’s main villain, which would force Mark to reckon with his father’s philosophy once again. There’s still very little news about the Invincible live-action movie, although it remains in development.

Blade Runner 2099
Amazon Prime Video, Release Date TBA
Blade Runner 2049‘s underwhelming box office performance made a sequel seem unlikely, but Blade Runner 2099 will carry on the franchise in a TV format. It seems unlikely that any of the movie’s characters will return for the show, since several new cast members have already been announced, with Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer being the biggest names. This suggests that Blade Runner 2099 will focus on a new story within the same universe.

Blade Runner 2099: Everything We Know So Far About the Sequel Series
Blade Runner 2099 is officially happening, and this is everything we know so far.
Blade Runner 2099 recently wrapped filming, so a release date still seems a long way off, but the show is slated to arrive at some point in 2025. Although many cast members have been revealed, the story remains a mystery. It’s possible that the show will follow one or more blade runners as they hunt down replicants, but this is purely speculation, and it will remain so until a trailer or some plot details are released. No matter what the show is about, the prospect of returning to the strange dystopia is reason enough for fans to be excited.

Daredevil: Born Again
Disney+, March 4
Daredevil was probably the most popular Marvel Netflix show, so fans will be excited to see Charlie Cox and the rest of the cast returning for Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+. The show has been in development for at least three years, but its release date is finally approaching. Born Again will be a continuation of Daredevil, with the added bonus that it connects to the rest of the MCU.
Since Daredevil: Born Again is part of the MCU, there have been several rumors that the Disney+ show could have some big guest stars.
Since Daredevil: Born Again is part of the MCU, there have been several rumors that the Disney+ show could have some big guest stars, with other heroes or Marvel villains crossing paths with Matt Murdock in Hell’s Kitchen. It will be interesting to see how much the show changes to adapt to its new surroundings, but the return of most of the key cast members suggests it will largely stick to the same game plan as the Netflix show. Season 2 has already been confirmed.

Alien: Earth
FX, Release Date TBA (Summer)
The Alien franchise’s first TV show has been a long time coming. Ever since Disney acquired the rights to 20th Century Fox in 2019, they have had plans to expand the franchise. After Alien: Romulus, the next step is Alien: Earth, which will be on FX in summer. Some story details have been revealed, but the cryptic teaser trailer doesn’t give anything away. It could hint at the dark tone of the show, however.
Fargo showrunner Noah Hawley seems to be leaning into the horror genre with Alien: Earth. Set in 2120, the show will follow a group of soldiers who discover the ruins of an alien vessel. This puts it after Prometheus in the Alien franchise timeline, but just two years before the events of the original Alien movie. It’s possible that Alien: Earth will directly lead into Alien, with the Weyland-Yutani Corporation sending the Nostromo to acquire a xenomorph specimen after seeing its destructive potential on Earth.

After the excruciating four-year gap between seasons 5 and 6, Black Mirror seems to be back to more regular programming, with season 7 confirmed for 2025. After season 6 included some unusual episodes that veered into fantasy and horror without any sci-fi, Charlie Brooker has stated that season 7 will be a return to “OG Black Mirror,” as he puts it. There will be six episodes in total, two of which Brooker describes as feature-length.

Five of the new episodes are being kept quiet, but fans can look forward to a sequel to season 4’s “USS Callister,” with Jesse Plemons, Cristin Milioti and the rest of the cast returning. “USS Callister” is one of the best Black Mirror episodes, so it’s a good choice for the anthology show’s first sequel. Other actors confirmed for Black Mirror season 7 include Awkwafina, Paul Giamatti, Peter Capaldi, Issa Rae and Rashida Jones.

The Last Of Us (Season 2)
HBO, Release Date TBA
The Last of Us is HBO’s first video game adaptation, but it’s among the very best video game adaptations on TV. The show stays faithful to the story of the games, which is a wise move since the narrative is one of the game’s biggest strengths. This means that people who have played the games can already guess most of what The Last of Us season 2 will cover, but the show promises a few surprises.
Ahead of season 2, HBO has announced that The Last of Us has a third season in development too.
Ahead of season 2, HBO has announced that The Last of Us has a third season in development too. This suggests that the show will begin to deviate from the narrative of the games, since there are only two games. The Last of Us season 2 will supposedly contain some stories related to the main narrative that don’t necessarily play out on-screen. Kaitlyn Dever has been cast as Abby, a key character in season 2, while Catherine O’Hara has also joined the cast in an undisclosed role.

Severance (Season 2)
Apple TV+, January 17
- Release Date
-
February 18, 2022
Severance season 1 was quickly recognized as one of the best Apple TV+ shows, but it has taken an irritating amount of time for season 2 to finally arrive. Fans could be forgiven for needing a Severance season 1 recap before diving into the second batch of episodes, but it would be hard to forget the cliffhanger that ends the season, as Mark discovers that his wife is still alive, and that he’s been working with her at Lumon all along.
Severance season 2 sees Mark and his co-workers back at Lumon, meaning that their “outies” decided to return to work despite learning of the perverse horrors of Lumon Industries’ severed floor. They could try to escape once more, and Mark could be motivated to find more answers about his wife. The trailer promises more sci-fi weirdness, more dark humor, and new stars including Bob Balaban and Alia Shawkat.

Stranger Things (Season 5)
Netflix, Release Date TBA
Stranger Things has been one of Netflix’s flagship shows since its debut back in 2016, but it’s finally coming to an end in 2025 with its fifth season. The show’s fourth season left a lot of ground to cover, with Vecna defeated but not yet killed, and all manner of new horrors now looming over Hawkins. Eleven and Vecna’s battle will come to a conclusion in one way or another when season 5 is released.

Stranger Things season 5 will bring the epic Netflix sci-fi horror saga to a conclusion, and here’s everything we know about Eleven’s return.
Since Stranger Things season 5 wrapped filming in December, it probably won’t hit Netflix until the second half of 2025. To fuel speculation, the show has released the titles of each of the final season’s eight episodes, although episode 2 – “The Vanishing of _” – is partially redacted. The series finale is titled “The Rightside Up,” which seems to hint towards a restoring of the natural order and a final battle to protect Hawkins from the Upside Down.

Andor (Season 2)
Disney+, April 22
- Release Date
-
September 21, 2022
Disney’s Star Wars shows have been a mixed bag, but Andor stands out as a shining light. Cassian Andor seemed like an odd choice for a spinoff, since the Rogue One character doesn’t have the broad appeal of more famous characters from earlier Star Wars movies, but the lack of expectations has given Andor more freedom to tell its story. Season 1 contains elements of crime, espionage and political drama, and it also has plenty of thrilling sci-fi action.
Andor was originally envisioned as a five-season story, but Disney has confirmed that season 2 will end the show.
Andor is one of many exciting upcoming Star Wars projects, and fans have had to wait three years for season 2. The story will span four years as the Rebel Alliance continues to develop, so there’s a chance that more characters from Rogue One or other Star Wars movies could make an appearance. Andor was originally envisioned as a five-season story, but Disney has confirmed that season 2 will end the show by leading directly into the events of Rogue One. Hopefully, less is more.
