New reports claim Ahsoka season 2 is set to begin filming in April 2025, with the Star Wars TV show relocating to the U.K. and apparently taking a different approach. The first live-action TV show made by George Lucas’ protégé Dave Filoni, Ahsoka was a hit for Disney+. With Lucasfilm’s focus shifting to the big screen once again, Ahsoka is the only live-action Star Wars TV show in pre-production right now, and it’s expected to begin filming in spring 2025.
The latest report from IndieWire confirms this, reporting that filming is tentatively expected to begin filming in April next year. More intriguing, though, the production is reportedly moving to the U.K. – something of a blow for the Los Angeles film industry. According to IndieWire, “the show will utilize multiple different film techniques.“ That’s a promising sign, suggesting this will be a very different show, one that’s massively improved from the first season.

Ahsoka season 1 was a huge success for Lucasfilm, breaking a downward trend in engagement with the various Star Wars TV shows. It wasn’t perfect, though; modern Star Wars has depended on the Volume, innovative CGI technology that has gradually lost its shine. That makes the report that Ahsoka will use a variety of production techniques particularly exciting, because it should lend itself to a much more dynamic, kinetic show.

It’s easy to see why Dave Filoni wanted to focus on the Volume for Ahsoka season 1. His background lies in animation, and the Volume allows for much more control over production, which would have helped him transition to live-action. But the end of Ahsoka saw Ahsoka Tano and Sabine Wren stranded on the extragalactic planet Peridea, and this needed to feel like a much more well-developed, “real” planet. There’s no substitute for location filming when it comes to creating a truly immersive sense of place.

What makes this even more exciting, of course, is that Ahsoka season 2 seems to be a step along the road to a destination announced at last year’s Star Wars Celebration. The various Mandalorian-era TV shows (and movies) are building to a climax, with Filoni directing his first Star Wars movie. This is generally expected to feature Lars Mikkelsen’s Grand Admiral Thrawn as the main villain, and it’s safe to assume Ahsoka and Sabine will get back to the main galaxy to participate in that epic adventure.
There had been some concerns Filoni would depend purely on Volume technology for everything he was working on. This latest report suggests he’s instead seeking to continue refining his skills, moving to different production techniques. That should make Ahsoka season 2 a marked improvement, while also boding well for his upcoming Star Wars movie.
