New art brings together Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom and Chris Evans’ evil Captain America ahead of their returns to the MCU in Avengers: Doomsday. Throughout the Infinity Saga, Tony Stark and Steve Rogers were the faces of the MCU, but while Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans have been confirmed to be returning, it seems they won’t be reprising their roles of Iron Man and Captain America. Downey Jr.’s new villain role of Doctor Doom has spurred theories that other MCU veterans will also portray dark versions of their former heroes.
The most popular casting theory suggests that Chris Evans may be returning to the MCU to portray a version of Steve Rogers who became indoctrinated by HYDRA at a young age. This twisted version of Captain America has now been depicted alongside Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom in new art shared by arifinity_, and the pair have also surprisingly been joined by an evil Hulk, Maestro. This follows speculation that an evil Avengers team will be forming in Avengers: Doomsday, comprising Doctor Doom, HYDRA’s Captain America and more.
What Chris Evansโ Return As Evil Captain America Would Mean For The MCU
HYDRA’s Captain America Debuted In Marvel Comics In 2016
Following Robert Downey Jr.’s recasting as Victor Von Doom, it would make sense for other MCU veterans to appear in Avengers: Doomsday as twisted versions of their classic heroes. This perfectly sets up Chris Evans to appear as HYDRA’s version of Captain America, who made his mark on Marvel Comics in 2016’s Captain America: Steve Rogers storyline. This version of Steve Rogers was created by the Cosmic Cube, named Kobik, originating in an alternate reality where he’d been indoctrinated by HYDRA at a young age and raised by the likes of Daniel Whitehall.
Chris Evans’ MCU Movie | Year | Role |

Captain America: The Winter Soldier | 2014 | Steve Rogers’ Captain America |
Avengers: Age of Ultron | 2015 | Steve Rogers’ Captain America |
Ant-Man | 2015 | Steve Rogers’ Captain America |
Captain America: Civil War | 2016 | Steve Rogers’ Captain America |
Spider-Man: Homecoming | 2017 | Steve Rogers’ Captain America |
Avengers: Infinity War | 2018 | Steve Rogers’ Captain America |

After replacing Earth-616’s Captain America, HYDRA’s Steve Rogers set to work restoring HYDRA’s former glory by unraveling a scheme that gave him control of the United States in the Secret Empire event, though he was soon defeated by the returned heroic Captain America. Chris Evans has now portrayed two superheroes in the MCU, so it would be a huge shake-up to see him debut as a villain in Avengers: Doomsday. This would even more impactful if he’s featured in a team with the likes of Doctor Doom and Maestro, completely twisting the MCU’s original Avengers line-up.
Our Take On Chris Evans Returning As Evil Captain America
An Evil Captain America Would Be A Fun Twist In The MCU
It would be fantastic to see Chris Evans bring darker tones to his classic role of Steve Rogers’ Captain America in the MCU’s Phase 6. Evans has routinely suggested he’s reluctant to reprise the role of Captain America for fear of ruining Steve Rogers’ perfect ending in Avengers: Endgame, but bringing this evil version of the Star-Spangled-Man into live-action would solve this issue. This would make Avengers: Doomsday one of the most interesting and exciting Multiverse Saga movies, especially if Chris Evans is joined by all the other original Avengers in new, sinister roles.

Avengers: Doomsday is the fifth Avengers film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will bring together heroes, new and old, to face off against Victor von Doom – played by the returning Robert DOwney Jr.. Avengers 5 will also mark the beginning of phase 6 of the MCU.
