Max’s epic prequel series Dune: Prophecy explores the early period of the beloved sci-fi franchise, and the origins of the Bene Gesserits will continue in season 2. Developed for the screen by Diane Ademu-John and Alison Schapker, Prophecy loosely adapts the book series by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, which explores the early periods of each of the major houses in the Dune franchise. More specifically, Dune: Prophecy concerns the rise of the Bene Gesserit sect, and how they assumed control over the events of the universe more than 10,000 years before Paul Atreides’ rise to power.
With the heady complex lore of the Dune franchise as its backdrop, Dune: Prophecy follows in the footsteps of other HBO hits like Game of Thrones. Considering the plethora of events that could be investigated by the series, there was no reason to think that Prophecy would be a one-and-done miniseries. Planting seeds (much like the Bene Gesserits themselves) throughout season 1’s story, it’s clear that designs were in place to turn Dune: Prophecy into the next great franchise epic. Season 2 could rival contemporaries like House of the Dragon and Rings of Power, albeit from the sci-fi genre instead.
Dune: Prophecy Season 2 Latest News
Dune: Prophecy Season 2 Is Renewed
Coming mere days before the season 1 finale, the latest news confirms that Dune: Prophecy season 2 is on the way. The massive sci-fi series’ future was never certain, and the grand scale of season 1 could have also been its downfall due to high cost. However, HBO made their intentions clear by preemptively renewing the show, which should turn all eyes to its epic season 1 finale. Furthermore, an early renewal might inspire new viewers to start streaming the show since it won’t leave then high and dry without a sophomore season.
Dune: Prophecy premiered on November 17, 2024.
Sarah Aubrey, Head of Max Original Programming, issued a glowing statement about the upcoming season, saying:
DUNE: PROPHECY has captivated audiences around the globe thanks to the visionary leadership of showrunner and executive producer Alison Schapker, who will continue to guide this grand tale of truth and power. We are incredibly grateful to our partners at Legendary and to our extraordinary cast and crew for their service to the Imperium. Weโre excited to collaborate with this team again to see what they have in store.
Jason Clodfelter, Legendaryโs President of Television also added:
This new season will allow us to continue building out the groundbreaking, epic DUNE franchise that has captivated audiences worldwide across its installments. We look forward to continuing our incredible partnership with HBO and are thrilled for Alison Schapker, her team, and the cast and crew who have worked so passionately to bring this world-class source material from Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson to life.
Dune: Prophecy Season 2 Is Confirmed
A Sophomore Season Is Coming Soon
Dune: Prophecy was a big gamble for HBO, and there was no guarantee that viewers would be interested in such a dense exploration of the history of Frank Herbert’s universe. However, those doubts proved to be unfounded, and the series became a bona fide streaming hit. This prompted the series to score an early season 2 renewal just a few days before the season 1 finale. Unsurprisingly, few details are known about the next season yet, but it’s expected that things will become clearer soon.
Dune: Prophecy Season 2 Cast Details
Who Will Return In The Dune Prequel?
Predicting the cast of Dune: Prophecy season 2 is nearly impossible at this juncture for several reasons. First, season 1 hasn’t been finished yet, and there’s always the chance that many characters will die before the ending. Second, it’s not certain if the show will jump forward in the 10,000-year timeline and leave all the characters in season 1 behind. The Dune books series is no stranger to massive time jumps, and they might continue in Dune: Prophecy, especially if the Herbert and Anderson prequel books are used as inspiration.
However, assuming season 2 continues on from season 1, there are a few major cast members that will likely return to reprise their roles. Most important of all, it’s expected that Emily Watson will be back as one half of the Harkonnen sisters, Valya, while Olivia Williams will return to play the other, Tula. Since they are the puppet masters of the early days of the Bene Gesserit, they will probably have more business in the sophomore outing.
Until more information is given, the cast of Dune: Prophecy season 2 will likely include:

Dune: Prophecy Season 2 Story Details
Over 10 Thousand Years Of History To Explore
It could also stick with the Harkonnen sisters as they continue their work, or perhaps open the door for more of the great houses to get involved as well.
Based on what’s been said about the grand scope of Dune: Prophecy, it’s clear that the development of the Bene Gesserit and the beginnings of their epic designs is only part of the prequel’s larger story. This means the sophomore season has literally 10 millennia of history to incorporate if it wants to jump ahead. It could also stick with the Harkonnen sisters as they continue their work, or perhaps open the door for more of the great houses to get involved as well.
However, it’s impossible to speculate about what exactly will happen in Dune: Prophecy season 2 until the entire scope of the debut outing is known. It’s entirely possible that the season will reveal what the future plans are, and make it clear whether viewers will stay with Emperor Javicco Corrino and the Harkonnen sisters, or jump to some other point in the timeline as laid out in the prequel novels.
