Everything Inside IT's Vault In Silo Explained

Bernard finally takes Lukas to the IT’s Vault in Silo season 2’s episode 7, giving him access to a forbidden room that only a handful of people have seen in the past. In Hugh Howey’s original Silo books, Lukas Kyle becomes Bernard’s shadow soon after Juliette leaves Silo 18. Owing to this, it was surprising that the show took significant creative liberties by portraying Judge Meadows as Bernard’s first choice to become his potential successor. Fortunately, the Apple TV+ sci-fi series has gradually drifted back to the original story by portraying Lukas as Bernard’s new shadow.

Despite feeling betrayed by his employee in Silo season 1 and sending him off to the mines, Bernard puts his trust in Lukas in season 2. He realizes that even though Lukas had been disloyal to him in the past, he would be grateful if he ended his sentence at the mines and made him his shadow. Bernard is also impressed by Lukas’ ability to embrace his curiosity and use his imagination to find answers to their world’s gripping mysteries. Therefore, he makes him his shadow and takes him to the mysterious Vault in the IT, where he hopes Lukas will decode Quinn’s cryptic letter.

Living Quarters

Allowing The Shadow To Live Inside The Vault

Moments after Bernard and Lukas enter the Vault, Bernard mentions that it has living quarters with decent food and comfortable beds. This reveals that other than containing valuable resources to learn about Silo 18 and the world they live in, the Vault also has room to accommodate many people for an extended period. Citizens appointed as shadows of the mayor can live inside the Vault as long as they please and consume as much information as they want.

Like Silo 18, Silo 17 must also have full-fledged living quarters with beds, allowing Solo to live a fairly comfortable life while staying shut inside Silo 17’s vault for decades.

During their stay, the shadows also get access to a massive supply of food and water. This explains how Solo managed to survive in Silo 17 without ever leaving his vault. It also discloses where Solo was getting all the food from for Juliette in Silo season 2’s initial episodes. Like Silo 18, Silo 17 must also have full-fledged living quarters with beds, allowing Solo to live a fairly comfortable life while staying shut inside Silo 17’s vault for decades.

Variety Of Artifacts

There Are Many Paintings, Ancient Vases, & Sculptures On The Vault’s Walls

Soon after Lukas Kyle enters the Vault, he finds himself surrounded by an endless number of artifacts, including paintings, vases, and sculptures, each seemingly telling a story about humanity’s forgotten past. The walls in the Vault are lined with multiple shelves and glass display cases, filled with objects that once held cultural or archaeological significance for humanity. While Lukas’ purpose is to focus solely on reading material and finding a way to decode Salvador Quinn’s letter, it is intriguing how the silos’ creators decided to store so much of humanity’s history in the Vault.

What The Legacy Is In Silo & Why It’s Kept Secret

Bernard finally gives Lukas access to the Legacy in Silo season 2’s episode 7, raising many questions about what it is and why it was kept hidden.

Since there are a total of 50 silos, it is hard not to be curious about whether each silo has the same artifacts or whether they all contain different collections. The Apple TV+ sci-fi show previously established that any object revealing the truth about humanity’s life before the silos were built is usually considered a banned red-level relic because it could instill ideas of rebellion and freedom. This raises questions about how Bernard expects his shadows to maintain their loyalty after learning so much about the world’s fascinating history.

Hard & Soft Copies Of Thousands Of Books

Lukas Has Access To An Abundance Of Information

Since most regular citizens of Silo 18 never had access to a lot of books, Lukas is blown away by the sheer number of books lining the shelves in the Vault. To Lukas’ surprise, Bernard also shows him a tablet computer and reveals it houses an extensive digital library. When Lukas feels overwhelmed with the amount of resources he has at his fingertips and struggles to understand where he should begin, Bernard helps him by showing how he can command the tablet to find relevant books.

Silo season 2 is adapting the second half of Hugh Howey’s first Silo book, Wool.

Given how Lukas’ sole purpose is to decode Quinn’s letter, he will only need books revolving around cryptography and ciphers. However, with so many books stored inside the Vault, Bernard’s new shadow seems to have access to information about myriad topics. The vast number of books in the vault reveal how characters like Solo and Meadows know so much about the outside world and life before the silos. Meadows must have read a lot during her tenure as the shadow, and Solo, too, must have spent almost all his days consuming information while staying shut in his Vault.

The Legacy

The Legacy Has Elements Of AI

A hologram appears on a transparent screen in the Vault and verifies and greets Lukas before Bernard explains other aspects of the room to him. Moments later, Bernard also reveals that Lukas only has to ask a question to the “Legacy” on the tablet computer, and it will present him with all the information he needs. When the people from the Mechanical launch a rocket in Silo season 2’s episode 7, the Legacy raises an alarm and tells Bernard that a “Delta event” is unfolding in their Silo.

Before Meadows died in a previous Silo episode, Bernard showed her a VR headset and asked if she used it when she “sat with the Legacy.“ All these references to the Legacy and its functions in the Silo suggest that it is some form of an AI. While its bigger implications will likely be revealed in Silo season 2’s future episodes, the presence of high-end technology like the Legacy confirms how the show’s present timeline is set hundreds of years in the future.

Sustaining The Same Technology For Over 300 Years Requires Constant Maintenance

While showing Lukas the Vault, Bernard mentions in the Silo season 2 episode that he may not find a lot of information on the history of the silos. He discloses that although the Legacy claims the silos were built 352 years ago, it reveals nothing about the creators’ purpose or plan. Since high-end technology like the Legacy, the tablet, and the screens in the Vault have remained functioning for over three centuries after Silo 18’s creation, the room in the IT must also have enough equipment, including batteries and product replacements, to sustain such advanced systems.
