The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has called on the Federal University Dutsin-Ma (FUDMA) to intensify efforts in providing adequate transportation for students commuting between the take-off campus and the new site.
In a statement issued by the FRSC Sector Commander, Mr. Aliyu Ma’aji, and communicated by the command’s spokesman, Shamsudeen Babajo, on Sunday in Kastina, the corps condemned the use of trucks and trailers to convey students, and described it as a dangerous and unacceptable practice.
“We urge the university management to expedite the repairs of school buses to ensure the safety of students. We have seen viral social media posts showing students dangerously perched on trucks traveling to the main campus, which is alarming,” Ma’aji said.
The commander also revealed that the FRSC has mobilized a standby patrol team in collaboration with the Koza Unit to monitor and enforce compliance with transportation safety standards. He warned that such hazardous practices could result in accidents and loss of lives.
In response, FUDMA’s spokesperson, M. Nasir Abdul, stated that the university has made adequate provisions for buses to ferry students.
“The university management has provided enough buses with adequate fuel for the students’ conveyance, and we ensure their safety with security escorts due to the security situation in the region,” Abdul explained.
He acknowledged isolated incidents but attributed them to some students’ impatience.
“The students you saw on trucks might be those who refused to wait for the school buses to return for them. We frown upon this behavior, as it undermines the efforts made to ensure their safe transportation,” he added.
