Ever since I was a kid, I adored the Batman Beyond animated series, and growing up, it’s always been a mystery why the character has never been adapted with their incredible suit into live-action before the DCU. There is nothing that quite compares to the joy of watching Saturday morning cartoons as a kid in the 1990s, and Batman Beyond came right at the tail end of that decade, offering yet another incredible superhero story for kids to enjoy.
However, the hero in Batman Beyond was no ordinary Batman. While Batman had existed for decades, and the hero was well known and loved by many, Batman Beyond was a brand-new hero created just before the turn of the millennium when everyone was looking to the future, as a way to explore what a futuristic Batman could be like. And the result was something that lit my kid brain on fire with excitement because of how ridiculously cool and unique it was, with a suit that made the character fresh for a new generation.

It’s Been 25 Years, It’s Time To Go Beyond
The character was first developed for animated cartoons, even before they had their debut in the comics. So, the design and development of this hero was made specifically with the cartoon audience and medium in mind. As a result, the city of Neo Gotham was designed, the world of futuristic villains and gangs descended from earlier influential villains was introduced, and Terry McGinnis with his high-tech suit that made Bruce Wayne’s original costume look like an unimaginative toy, were all realized in beautiful animated glory.

An epic fan film has imagined the look of a futuristic Gotham from Batman Beyond in live-action, over two decades after the show ended.
The suit was sleek, black, with red accents and minimal accessories, but the technology made it exceptional. With the most minor movements, Terry could access wings, jet engines, and many other imaginative gadgets, all while enhancing the wearer’s abilities beyond normal human range. The Batman Beyond batsuit is just incredibly cool, and it feels like something that should be simple enough to bring over into live-action, aside from the full face mask that still allowed Terry’s mouth to appear through it.
Batman Beyond’s Adaptation History Means We Narrowly Missed Getting The Live-Action Suit On-Screen
The Batman Beyond Movie Almost Got Made Years Ago
And at one point, there were plans to adapt the character for the big screen. In the early 2000s, when the character was still in its infancy, there were plans from Warner Bros. to develop a movie revolving around Terry McGinnis. At the time, WB was thinking about ways to build the franchise for films again, and reimagine what came before. This ultimately led the studios to hire Christopher Nolan and make The Dark Knight Trilogy, but for a brief window, there was a plan to get the live-action Batman Beyond movie up and running too.
There was even a director attached, Boaz Yakin, who went through the process of creating an initial script with the creators of the character (via IGN). However, after writing that draft, Yakin felt overwhelmed by the pressure of making a Batman movie, and he swiftly departed. Of course, that makes sense, but it still feels like a hugely disappointing loss to have come so close to seeing the hero on the big screen only for those dreams to be dashed. Fortunately, a fan film gained traction on crowdfunding sites, and a short film called Batman Beyond: Year One was produced, which gives a small taste of how incredible this movie could be.

James Gunn And The DCU Needs To Make It Happen
With the rise of epic movie universes, there have been highs and lows, with the recent DCEU suffering from a few more of the latter. However, with the new DCU, and a clear plan to expand and build their own huge sprawling franchise with heroes, monsters, and the Elseworlds, it seems more likely than ever that Batman Beyond could be coming to live-action in the near future. While they may wish to focus on contemporary stories, and develop their version of the Justice League to begin with, Gunn has made it clear that other projects will shed light on obscure and lesser known stories from throughout DC.
