John Krasinski will be seen in a new Prime Video thriller series, which could be the perfect replacement for Jack Ryan and a highly acclaimed show from 2010. Created by Carlton Cuse and Graham Roland, Prime Video’s Jack Ryan was not the first adaptation of Tom Clancy’s book series. Many film series and spin-offs tried to bring the novelist’s “Ryanverse” to the screen but failed to leave a mark despite the source material’s immense potential.
Fortunately, Amazon’s Jack Ryan series did not tread the same path. Starring John Krasinski as the titular character, the Jack Ryan show consistently performed well among critics before ending its solid run with season 4. While a spin-off to the series, starring Michael Peรฑa as Ding Chavez, and a sequel Jack Ryan movie are in development, the original show will not return to Prime Video for another season. However, viewers who miss watching the series can now look forward to Krasinski’s upcoming thriller, which has the potential to perform as well as Jack Ryan, if not better.
Silent River Gives John Krasinski A New Prime Thriller After Jack Ryan
Krasinski Is One Of The Two Leading Stars In The Upcoming Thriller Series
Unlike Jack Ryan, Prime Video’s upcoming thriller, Silent River, will follow an original story written by Aaron Rabin, who was also one of the writers and co-executive producers for the Tom Clancy TV adaptation. As the show’s plot details suggest, it will center on the perspectives of two men, played by John Krasinski and Matthew Rhys. While portraying how the lives of the two characters are more connected than they realize, Silent River will explore how the discovery of a serial killer in a small American town will disrupt the fabric of their lives and those around them.

From intelligence analyst and professor to field agent and acting deputy director, Jack Ryan has had plenty of jobs and titles across all adaptations.
While Silent River does not sound like a typical detective thriller show like Jack Ryan, it still promises to be a tense, character-driven drama like the Tom Clancy adaptation. Its plot details suggest it may not feature high-octane action sequences and global espionage like Jack Ryan. However, similar to Jack Ryan, Kransisnki’s character in Silent River will also seemingly find himself reckoning with his fears, personal struggles, and motivations as he gets to the bottom of the overarching serial killer mystery. This could effectively make Silent River a perfect Jack Ryan replacement for the actor.
Silent River Can Give Matthew Rhys His Best TV Role Since The Americans
The Actor Has Only Had A Few Major Projects Since The Americans
In a career spanning over two decades, Matthew Rhys has played myriad roles in TV shows and movies. However, in recent years, he has been best known for playing Philip Jennings in The Americans, which also earned him the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 2018. While most details about his character in Silent River remain unknown, it marks his return to the thriller genre, potentially giving him his best TV role since The Americans.
Show | Rotten Tomatoes Critics’ Score | Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score |
Jack Ryan | 78% | 73% |
The Americans | 96% | 94% |
Both John Krasinski and Matthew Rhys seem perfect fits to play the leads in Silent River because of their vast experience in portraying complex spy characters in Jack Ryan and The Americans. While only time will tell whether Silent River will be as good as Jack Ryan and The Americans, the Prime Video series already seems to be on the right path with its casting choices. If all goes well for the show, it could become the next big thriller under Matthew Rhys and John Kransinski‘s belts.
