Shrinking Creator Addresses Whether HIMYM’s Cobie Smulders Will Return In Season 3

Shrinking co-creator Bill Lawrence discusses whether Cobie Smulders will return in season 3 of the Apple TV+ series. Smulders unexpectedly debuted as a new character named Sofi in season 2, episode 10, where she reunited with her How I Met Your Mother co-star Jason Segel, who plays Jimmy and is one of Shrinking‘s co-creators. There were romantic sparks between Jimmy and Sofi, potentially teasing that the actors’ How I Met Your Mother reunion could continue in Shrinking season 3.

While speaking about Shrinking‘s future with TVLine, Lawrence revealed that he wants Smulders to return in season 3, while acknowledging that her reprising the role of Sofi has not been solidified yet. He explains that Sofi was included to tease what moving forward could look like for Jimmy in season 3. Lawrence emphasized that he will “do everything I can” to convince Smulders to return to build off the wonderful dynamic established between Sofi and Jimmy in season 2. I would kill to have Cobie back in the show. We always do Easter eggs for what the next season’s about in the season before. And so, Cobie’s character is kind of a personification, a visual representation of what moving forward looks like for Jason’s character. If I can’t get lucky enough to have her back, we’re gonna have to go back to the drawing board. I was a How I Met Your Mother fan and I did not even think about it when I was watching the scene, which is a good thing because a bad version of that could be like, “Oh, this is kind of cool. It’s just two old friends from a beloved show doing a scene together,” but it felt authentic and was so romantic. I thought they were both so good in it that I’m gonna do everything I can to coerce her into coming back to the show.

Cobie Smulders’ Return Is Likely

While Lawrence’s comments do not confirm Smulders’ return, his enthusiasm is a promising sign of her continuing to play Sofi in season 3. Smulders has also been enthusiastic about reuniting with Segel, working on Shrinking season 2, and the possibility of exploring Sofi further. Since both Smulders and Shrinking‘s creative team are eager to see more of her, as long as there is no scheduling conflict with other projects that she is involved in, there is a high chance of her being in season 3.

Beyond being a satisfying How I Met Your Mother reunion, a serious romantic relationship between Jimmy and Sofi would help him continue to move forward, while also presenting new challenges, including in his relationship with his daughter, Alice, which could lead to compelling storylines in future Shrinking episodes.
