Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk reveals the meaning behind season 2’s mid-credits scene. After a long hiatus between seasons, Squid Game returned to Netflix for a second installment of the South Korean survival thriller. Only a few seconds long, the scene seems to focus on the players getting ready for another game of Red Light Green Light. Arguably the show’s most well-known deadly contest, the short snippet highlights that there will be a new addition when Squid Game season 3 debuts in 2025.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hwang revealed that the credits scene actually offers a preview of a new giant doll named Cheol-su that will feature in season 3. She’s like Young-hee, the doll from Red Light Green Light. But it also hints at a new exciting game, says Hwang, who wrote and directed all of season 2. Read the quote below:

That’s actually a [sneak peek] of Cheol-su, who, like Young-hee, is a new giant doll that we’re going to be showcasing in season 3. And that’s also a hint at the most exciting game in season 3 as well. So, while it hasn’t been shared yet, I hope everyone will be excited to meet Cheol-su and the new game.

It’s Back To The Games

Squid Game season 2 ends with Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) leading a failed rebellion and watching as his best friend, who has also joined the games, is shot and killed. There has been some speculation that the third and final installment will move away from the game structure, focusing instead on what happens to Gi-hun once he’s lost hope. However, Hwang confirms that games will still be important in season 3.

The new games may be even more brutal as a way of punishing Gi-hun for stepping out of line, putting an even more fatal twist on Red Light Green Light. That remains to be seen, of course. But with the mid-credits scene tease, it appears that Squid Game season 3 won’t wander too far away from the rhythms that helped make the Emmy-winning South Korean drama a success.

It Gives The Show A Boost

The ending to Squid Game season 2’s episode 7 is not quite the shocking closer to a season, as the drama’s long-awaited comeback ultimately ends up feeling a little slight. The show has seen a slight dip in reviews compared to season 1. At the time of writing, season 2 has a 90% Tomatometer and 73% Popcornmeter as opposed to season 1’s 95% and 84%.

Still, with an impressive response from critics and viewers, the show will likely be a huge hit for Netflix over the holiday season. With the show confirmed to conclude in 2025, the break between seasons won’t be too long and the mid-credits tease is an intriguing preview for Squid Game season 3.
