A tragic accident occurred on Sunday at Powerline, near Cele Bus Stop, Ita-Oluwo, Ikorodu, Lagos State, as two trucks collided, resulting in the death of two individuals.
Two others who were trapped in the wreckage were rescued alive and immediately taken to the General Hospital, Ikorodu, where they are receiving medical care.
The rescue operation was a collaborative effort involving officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Lagos Fire Service, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and personnel from the Nigerian Army’s 174 Battalion.
In a statement, LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq confirmed the incident and attributed the cause of the collision to brake failure on one of the trucks.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the loaded container truck suffered a brake failure while allegedly attempting to evade a revenue collector in pursuit. This mechanical failure triggered a catastrophic chain of events, including collisions with other vehicles and damage to nearby buildings,” Adebayo explained.
Efforts are ongoing to clear the accident scene, with LASTMA officials working to remove the trucks and restore normal traffic flow in the area.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, extended condolences to the families of the deceased and commended the swift response of the rescue teams.
He also wished the injured survivors a speedy recovery.
LASTMA reiterated its commitment to ensuring road safety and urged all road users to exercise caution and adhere strictly to traffic regulations to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
