The Mary Ikoku Foundation (MIF) successfully hosted its Free Nkwo Market Day event on December 31, 2024, providing essential groceries and household items to over 1000 participants.
A statement by the organisers revealed that the event, which took place at the Alvan Ville Event Space, Arochukwu, Abia state was a huge success, with participants arriving as early as 8 am to take part in the innovative market experience.
The statement said each participant received a “love currency” to shop for their choice of groceries and household items, including meat, yams, rice, beans, garri, and many more.
“The market event was seamless, with crowd control measures in place to prevent any incidents of rush or stampede. After shopping, participants were treated to a sumptuous meal, adding to the festive atmosphere.
“The celebration continued with music, dance, and merriment, as participants came together to celebrate life and pray for a better new year, 2025. The event also featured a dance competition for children, who were rewarded with exciting gifts, including school bags, Christmas clothing, math sets, exercise books, lunch boxes, and water bottles, generously donated by the Benjamin Okezie Kalu Foundation.
“The event was attended by notable personalities, including Ugwu Aro Oscar Chukwuma Okoro and Former Abia Minority Leader, Hon. Mike Ukoha, who showed their support for the foundation’s efforts,” the statement said.
Speaking to newsmen, Founder of MIF, Chief (Mrs) Mary Ikoku, who contested for House of Representatives seat in the 2023 election, expressed her fulfilment at seeing the smiles and laughter on the faces of her community.
“It is so empowering to see my brothers and sisters shop freely and pick their choice of groceries. The smiles on their faces are empowering. It is my hope that the next market event will be bigger. I call on friends, associates, and spirited Nigerians to support the foundation’s project to address the issue of food insecurity,” she said.
The foundation then extended its gratitude to other partner organisations including Unubiko Foundation, Benjamin Okezie Kalu Foundation, and RTD Thompsons Ltd for their donations, which contributed to the success of the event.
The Free Nkwo Market Day event is part of MIF’s ongoing efforts to address food insecurity and promote social welfare in rural communities.
Also known as Ajaja Women Farmers Project, MIF has empowered over 400 local women farmers through training, resources, and market access.
