Back To The Future’s Forgotten Sequel Gave The DeLorean Its Most Advanced Upgrade

Although relatively obscure, Back to the Future‘s forgotten sequel continues Doc Brown’s story and even presents a new and upgraded version of the DeLorean. Before Back to the Future hit the big screens, the DMC DeLorean was dropped in the American car market. Unfortunately, the car was not received too well and failed to reach its expected sales. However, the DeLorean gained newfound fame when it was featured as the central time machine in the first Back to the Future movie.

After being featured in all three Back to the Future live-action movies and other franchise expansions spawned by the films, the car became synonymous with time travel and rose in the ranks to become one of the iconic vehicles portrayed in cinema. Owing to this, it is not surprising that Back to the Future Part III‘s lesser-known follow-up also features it in its story. What is interesting, though, is that the forgotten sequel to the movie series portrays a highly upgraded version of the time-traveling car.

The DeLorean In Back To The Future’s Animated Series Is Way More Advanced

It Is A Lot More Than A Time Travel Machine

The Back to the Future animated series, which is set after the events of Back to the Future Part III, reveals that Doc Brown converted another DeLorean into a full-fledged time machine after the original one was destroyed at the end of the movie trilogy. From the Mr. Fusion reactor to the hover conversion, he seemingly builds everything in it from scratch and even adds new features to it. For instance, the new DeLorean has voice activation and can travel through both space and time.

The Back to the Future animated series ran on CBS from September 14, 1991, to December 26, 1992.

Its ability to travel through space shows that, unlike the DeLorean from the movies, it can appear in a different location from its point of origin. The new DeLorean in the series can also be folded into a suitcase, which enhances its portability. Apart from that, it also has a back seat and can be converted into a four-door car. It can also pop off a blimp and has a rear video screen. With so many new features, the DeLorean in the Back to the Future animated series is far more advanced than the one in the movies and reflects Doc Brown’s ability to consistently innovate his inventions.

Doc Brown Upgraded The DeLorean After The Events Of Back To The Future III

The Animated Series Presents More Of An Alternate Future

Even though the Back to the Future animated series is set after the events of the third live-action film, the movies’ co-creator Bob Gale called it (via Telltale Games) an alternate story by confirming that only the three live-action movies are canon. Regardless of where the movie falls in the overarching Back to the Future timeline, it highlights how Doc Brown did not hold himself back from upgrading the DeLorean after Back to the Future III‘s ending.
