One Severance Season 1 Scene Foreshadowed Devon's Genius Season 2 Plan To Help Mark Save Gemma

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Severance season 2’s episode 7.

Devon comes up with a genius plan to help Mark save Gemma in Severance season 2’s episode 7, which was subtly foreshadowed by a forgotten season 1 scene. The more Severance has progressed, the more viewers have wondered if it is heading in the same uncertain direction as other puzzle-box mystery shows like Lost. However, by paying off several moments from season 1, Severance season 2 has consistently proven that its creator, Dan Erickson, has an intricate long-term plan in mind.

In terms of payoffs, Severance season 2’s episode 7 has arguably been one of the most compelling episodes because it finally hints at what Lumon is doing to Gemma on the testing floor. A crucial scene from the episode also discloses what Devon plans to do to help Mark save Gemma before it is too late. Interestingly, a closer look at Devon’s brilliant idea shows how it connects to a brief but significant Severance season 1 scene.

Severance Season 1 Hinted That The Damona Birthing Retreat’s Cabins Also Split Innies & Outies

Gabby Arteta Used It During Her Pregnancy

In Severance season 1, Devon briefly stayed at the Damona Birthing Retreat during the final days of her pregnancy. After growing tired of Ricken and Mark’s presence one day, she headed over to another woman’s cabin and briefly talked to her. This woman was Gabby Arteta, the wife of Senator Angelo Arteta. Although Gabby and Devon seemingly got along really well, things took a strange turn when Devon met her again outside the retreat.

What Lumon Has Really Been Doing To Gemma/Ms. Casey In Severance

Severance season 2, episode 7 revealed vital elements of Gemma/Ms. Caseyโ€™s backstory, including what Lumon has been doing to her the entire time.

To Devon’s surprise, Gabby failed to recognize her when she bumped into her outside, which made her wonder if she was somehow severed. Devon’s two encounters with Gabby in Severance season 1 established that, other than the Lumon workers, people in the outside world were also severed. Although Devon was initially confused, she, too, seemingly connected the dots and realized that she interacted with Gabby’s innie when she met her at the retreat, suggesting that cabins at the Damona Birthing Retreat also allow one to switch to their innies.

Devon’s Brilliant Idea Reinstates She Is One Of The Most Reasonable Severance Characters

Devon Is Immune To Lumon’s Manipulation

Realizing that only Mark’s innie can help them save Gemma, Devon comes up with the brilliant idea of taking Mark to the retreat to be able to talk to his innie. While only time will tell whether this plan will work out, Devon’s ability to come up with such a genius plan shows that she is one of the most reasonable characters in Severance. While the entire town of Kier is seemingly being controlled and manipulated by Lumon, Devon is among the few who question the company’s methods and understand how its work might be negatively impacting the town.

…even though Devon has more of a side role in Severance, she is easily one of the most likable and reliable characters in the series.

Even in several previous arcs of the Apple TV+ sci-fi show, Devon stood as a voice of reason when characters like Ricken were easily falling into Lumon’s propaganda. She even supported Mark when he suggested that Gemma was possibly alive in Lumon. Owing to this, even though Devon has more of a side role in Severance, she is easily one of the most likable and reliable characters in the series.
