Robert De Niro‘s new political thriller jumps to Netflix’s top global spot in its second week. Widely regarded as one of the best actors of all time, De Niro has been nominated for an astounding nine Academy Awards over his illustrious career for films such as Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter, Awakenings, Cape Fear, Silver Linings Playbook, The Irishman, and Killers of the Flower Moon. He has won two Oscars for his performances in The Godfather Part II and Raging Bull.
Though the aforementioned movies are mostly all critically acclaimed dramas, De Niro has also starred in many genre films, such as comedies and thrillers, throughout his nearly 60-year acting career, including what is often considered one of the greatest crime thrillers ever — Michael Mann’s Heat. He’s also acted in some films featuring a political setting, such as the satire Wag the Dog, starring as a spin doctor who fabricates a war to distract voters from a presidential sex scandal. After spending most of his career in film, De Niro’s new political thriller represents his first major television role.

Zero Day‘s cast also includes Lizzy Caplan, Jesse Plemons, Joan Allen, Connie Britton, Bill Camp, Dan Stevens, McKinley Belcher III, Angela Bassett, and Matthew Modine.

Though reactions from critics and audiences have been mixed because of its over-the-top story, indicated by its 53% scores on Rotten Tomatoes, the presence of Robert De Niro is seemingly enough to compel audiences to continue streaming Zero Day on Netflix.
