Warning: Major spoilers ahead for season 4 of ShoresyWith some major characters missing from season 4 of Shoresy, one of the most underrated members of the Bulldogs finally got a chance to shine as a character. The first episode of season 4 revealed that a number of key characters went back to their hometowns for the summer, leaving just a few Bulldogs remaining to celebrate with the NOSHO Cup in Sudbury. That provided the opportunity for those characters, who had been rather limited in development thus far, to show a little more personality and add some more depth.
It’s possible that once the new season of Sudbury Blueberry Bulldogs hockey starts, then the characters who saw an expanded role in season 4 will go back to being much more minor characters. But by the end of season 4 of Shoresy, there were some seismic shifts in the dynamics of the show, most significantly the fact that Shoresy became a coach for the Bulldogs. Season 4 built to that change with several different subplots that showcased Shoresy’s leadership abilities, and one of the most heartwarming also heavily featured one of the show’s most underrated cast members.

The Underrated Character Got A Chance To Shine
Mark Michaels is the former coach turned standout goalie for the Bulldogs, and he played a relatively small role in the show for the first three seasons. Like the other key players (Dolo, Goody, Hitch, and JJ Frankie JJ), Michaels was sort of a one-note character, and his note was essentially saying something odd or lame and being aggressively told to shut up by Shoresy. However, the audience got to see a lot more of Michaels in season 4, as he evolved into one of the tight-knit circle of Shoresy’s closest friends on the team.
Michaels is played by Canadian actor Ryan McDonell, who is an accomplished musician and songwriter in addition to a sporadic actor. He’s had small roles in notable shows like Battlestar Galactica, Smallville, and The Flash, among others.
Michaels’ key story in season 4 was his exclusion from Weird Sudbury, the secretive party that the Bulldogs sought entry to. Unfortunately for Michaels, his ex-girlfriend Mercedes was the Bulldogs’ contact to get into the party, and she refused to allow him into the Prospects Party (an evening to prove you belong in Weird Sudbury). However, his exclusion led to Shoresy skipping out on the party as well, as the former team captain instead went to comfort his teammate in his own way. Michaels and Shoresy had a hilarious yet sincere conversation in one of the season’s more touching scenes.

Shoresy’s Selflessness Shone Through With The Goalie
As great as it was to see more of Michaels and the other key Bulldogs in season 4, Michaels’ story was particularly important for Shoresy himself. The fact that Shoresy was willing to skip the party that the Bulldogs have been trying to get into for the summer in order to make sure his teammate wasn’t alone is a great indicator of how truly selfless he’s become.

While not wanting to betray Laura Mohr surely played a role in his decision, him consoling Michaels was an exhibition of true leadership. In addition to the motivational speech he delivered to the Lakers and his mentorship of Jack over the summer, Shoresy’s porch conversation with Michaels was one of the most important moments leading up to him accepting Nat’s offer to coach.
