Egwene’s unique ability in The Wheel of Time books looks to finally make its way to the small screen when the show returns for its third season. Prime Video’s adaptation of Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series has depicted Egwene al’Vere as one of the strongest known female channelers in the current generation. This is true to her portrayal in the source material, but thus far, a key element of her character’s skillset has been missing.
That looks to change in The Wheel of Time season 3, which is confirmed to adapt The Shadow Rising, the fourth installment in the series. In The Shadow Rising, Egwene accompanied Rand, Moiraine, Mat, Lan, and Aviendha to the Aiel Waste, where an integral chapter in her arc unfolded. While the show has already expressed a willingness to remove certain plotlines and adjust the chronology of events, there’s already an indication that this particular journey will indeed occur soon.
Wheel Of Time Season 3 Is Setting Up Egwene’s Dreamwalking Abilities
Following a shot of Egwene gazing across the desert landscape in the Wheel of Time season 3 trailer, an Aiel woman is shown saying, “You do not belong here.“ This moment draws comparisons to chapter 11 of The Shadow Rising, “What Lies Hidden.” Up until this point, Egwene had been exploring The Wheel of Time’s dream world, Tel’aran’rhiod, and experiencing dreams she didn’t understand. In “What Lies Hidden,” Egwene was discovered by Amys, who had discovered the former’s presence in Tel’aran’rhiod.
Amys invited Egwene to receive training from herself and other members of the Wise Ones (Aiel women who can channel). Through her time with the Wise Ones, Egwene learned that she could Dreamwalk. It’s established in Wheel of Time lore that Dreamwalking is a talent lost to the Aes Sedai of the White Tower, but still practiced among the Aiel. As a Dreamwalker, Egwene can enter people’s dreams without the use of a ter’angreal, meaning she can do it under her own power.
Egwene will be able to harness this Talent and roam Tel’aran’rhiod on a fairly regular basis.
The Wheel of Time has yet to make a casting announcement regarding Amys, but this interaction in the trailer bears enough similarities to that chapter 11 scene to signal that Egwene’s Wise One training is about to start. From the looks of things, this is the moment where Amys catches Egwene in Tel’aran’rhiod. Once that happens and her training officially begins, Egwene will be able to harness this Talent and roam Tel’aran’rhiod on a fairly regular basis.
Egwene’s Dreamwalking Powers Explain Her Wheel Of Time Season 3 Story
The apparent inclusion of Egwene’s Dreamwalker powers shed light on her story in season 3 will work. Based on what’s previewed in the trailer, Egwene will play a role in both the Aiel Waste story and the upcoming Aes Sedai coup at the White Tower. Making Egwene relevant to events that take place on different sides of the Wheel of Time map would normally be difficult to pull off, but Dreamwalking will make accomplishing this task much easier.

Because Egwene can Dreamwalk, she doesn’t have to enter the Aiel Waste in a physical sense in order to drive that story forward. Likewise, she doesn’t have to go to Tanchico to have an impact on Nynaeve and Elayne’s impending conflict with Moghedien and Liandrin. In other words, Dreamwalking will enable season 3 to continue and develop her relationships with various Wheel of Time characters, regardless of her proximity to them on the map.
Why Wheel Of Time’s Dreamwalker Tease Is Great News For Egwene’s Future
The show seemingly revealing its intentions to explore Egwene’s Talent is a welcome development, given that it will help resolve a lingering discrepancy between her and the other four ta’veren in the series. As powerful as Egwene may be, she’s yet to demonstrate any qualities that distance her from the other main characters. Each of her fellow ta’veren from the Two Rivers bears a distinguishing trait: Rand is the Dragon Reborn, Perrin is a Wolfbrother, Nynaeve has unprecedented Healing abilities, and Mat has unlocked the memories of his past lives.
