Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for The Pitt season 1, episode 15.The last episodes of The Pitt season 1 were hectic and wild, but that chaos highlighted exactly who the best character in the medical drama is. The entire cast of The Pitt was filled with great characters, all of whom could easily be considered a personal favorite. From the sweet and lovable Dr. King (Taylor Dearden) to the surprisingly compassionate and complex Dr. Santos (Isa Briones), The Pitt featured some very well-written characters. They also all performed admirably during the PittFest shooting, and their efforts saved a lot of lives at the end of The Pitt season 1.
Everyone at PTMC did manage to shine in their own way while dealing with the PittFest shooting. Javadi (Shabana Azeez), for example, had a moment where she proved to her mother that she knew what she was doing and could handle the stress of emergency medicine. Likewise, Dr. Santos (Isa Briones) pulled off a REBOA and even earned praise from Dr. Abbot (Shawn Hatosy). One character in particular, however, cemented themselves as the best part of The Pitt in the last four episodes of the season, and they did so without even being at the hospital.
Collins Was Missed During The Pitt’s Final 4 Episodes
Collins Could Have Helped A Lot With The Shooting Victims & Robby’s Mental State
One character was notably absent from the PittFest shooting storyline at the end of The Pitt season 1: Dr. Heather Collins (Tracy Ifeachor). As one of Robby’s senior residents, Collins could have added a lot of talent and knowledge to PTMC’s treatment of the mass shooting casualties. She also could have been a great source of leadership and guidance in such a chaotic, stressful situation. For example, if Collins were there, it may not have been as hard to find a resident or attending physician, and Dr. Santos (Isa Briones) may not have had to do a REBOA by herself.
Collins could have helped with a lot more than just the PittFest shooting if she had still been in the hospital, however. Dr. Robby had some major mental health issues at the end of The Pitt season 1, and one of the many reasons he ended up on the roof of the hospital contemplating suicide is because many of his friends and loved ones were gone. If Collins had been there, she could have offered the same companionship and support to Robby as he did to her in The Pitt episode 11. Collins’ relationship with Dana (Katherine LaNasa) also may have helped her decide not to quit.
No other character, aside from maybe Robby himself, would have been as sorely missed in the final episodes of The Pitt as Collins was.
That combination of Collins’ effect on the hospital as a whole and her impact on individual characters like Robby and Dana really cemented her as one of the best parts of The Pitt. It’s honestly a brilliant bit of writing to highlight just how important Collins was by showing how things start to crumble in her absence. Any character who can have that much of an effect on a show by not being there is extraordinarily well-developed.
Why Collins Didn’t Return For The Mass Shooting Emergency
Robby Told Collins To Turn Her Phone Off When She Got Home, So She Didn’t Know About PittFest
It’s clear that Collins would have been a big help during the PittFest shooting, but what isn’t as clear is why she didn’t return to the hospital. It was, after all, a mass casualty event that required all hands on deck, and even Langdon returned after being thrown out of the hospital. The simple reason Collins didn’t come back is because she didn’t know the PittFest shooting had happened at all. If she had, she surely would have come back to PTMC and helped triage and treat all the shooting victims.

Despite the show’s timeline, The Pitt had one of the most captivating romances in medical drama history, and season 2 can only make it better.
In The Pitt episode 11, after Collins told Robby about her miscarriage, Robby told her to leave her shift an hour early. However, he also told Collins to “turn off your phone, turn off the TV, pour a glass of wine, have a bath, go to bed.” Collins evidently took Robby’s advice to heart, and since her electronics were off, there was no way of contacting her or even letting her know that there was a mass shooting. There was no way Collins or Robby could have known what was going to happen, and Collins deserved a bit of alone time after her miscarriage.
I Hope We Learn More About Collins In The Pitt Season 2
Collins’ Backstory & Relationship With Robby Are Some Of The More Intriguing Parts Of The Pitt
Collins’ absence from the final third of The Pitt season 1 also made another thing crystal clear: we need to learn more about her in The Pitt season 2. Collins is really the perfect character to examine more closely in the future. We could learn more about her romantic relationship with Robby in The Pitt, more about her attempts to get pregnant, and more about her career at PTMC. Since The Pitt season 2 takes place several months after season 1, we could even learn about how Collins is dealing with the (unfounded) guilt she likely feels for not being there to help with the PittFest shooting.

The Pitt season 2’s time jump should also make Collins an even more important character than she already is. As series creator R. Scott Gemmill has mentioned (via TVLine), many of the characters of The Pitt are going to be in new, more advanced roles in season 2. Collins was a senior resident in season 1, so she may even be an attending physician by The Pitt season 2. It would be very interesting to see how Collins runs her own shift at the hospital and how her relationships with people like Robby and Langdon have changed as she rises through the ranks in The Pitt.
