Equity market opens bearish, sheds N8bn

 

The domestic equity market Monday opened the week on a bearish note, depreciating by N8 billion.

Market capitalization of listed equities declined by 0.01 per cent to N945 trillion from N68.953 trillion reported the previous day.

The NGX All Share Index also depreciated by 12.31 basis points to 109697.83 points from 109710.14 points traded on Friday.

Although the market breadth was positive, with 46 stocks recording gains compared to 25 companies that experienced losses, the depreciation in some major stocks wipe out gains recorded by betaglass , NNFM champion Breweries and 43 other firms.

As a result year to date return declined to 6.58 per cent during the day.

An analysis of the investment showed that Tantalizer and Ikeja Hotel led gainers table with 10 per cent each to close at N2.53 and N15.40 per share respectively.Betaglass followed with a gain of 9.98 per cent to close at N258.50 per unit, Champion Breweries and Northern Nigeria Flour Mills gained 9.97 per cent each to close respectively at N7.50 and N131.85 per share.

On the contrary, TIP topped losers chart, dropping by 10 per cent to close at N6.12 per unit, ABC Transport trailed with a loss of 9.83: per cent to N2.66 per share, UPL dipped by 9.77 per cent to close at N3.97 per share, FTNCocoa down by 9.65 per cent to close at N2.34 per unit, RTBriscoe dipped by 9.52 per cent to close at N1.90 per share.

Volume of transactions went up by 54.31 million representing 12.57 per cent as investors exchanged 486.087 million shares valued at N11.381 billion in 24883 deals against 431.777 million shares cost N8.599 billion in 16400 deals.

Trading in the shares of AccessCorp led market activities with 45.116 million shares valued N1.053 billion, Fidelity Bank followed with account of 39.413 million shares cost N799.699 million, GTCO Plc traded 32.443 million shares worth N2.207 billion, Cutix Plc exchanged 24.086 million shares cost N67.022 million while United Bank for Africa sold a total of 20.592 million shares valued at N716.686 million.
