The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ondo State Command, has cautioned motorists on the dangers of driving vehicles with faulty wipers, lighting systems, and brakes, particularly during the rainy season.
Speaking with journalists in Akure on Wednesday, the FRSC State Sector Commander, Dr. Samuel Ibitoye, called for adequate vehicle maintenance, noting that poorly maintained components could lead to crashes and fatalities on the highway.
“As the rain has started, it behoves on us to ensure that our vehicle conditions are perfect before embarking on any journey. If the vehicle components are not good, it becomes a problem and affects vehicle performance, which could cause serious crashes on the highway,” Ibitoye said.
He explained that the rainy season demands more caution and heightened driving skills. Drivers, according to him, must ensure that their vehicles’ lighting systems are functional, wipers are in good condition, mirrors are intact, and brakes are fully operational.
The FRSC said it has launched public enlightenment and advocacy campaigns, and will also be conducting free vehicle safety checks across the state, aimed to reduce the risk of road crashes.
“Our personnel will be on the roads constantly to caution motorists and support safe driving practices. We urge drivers not to overspeed or engage in dangerous driving. Regular maintenance of vehicles is key,” Ibitoye said.
While addressing the issue of reckless driving among youths, the sector commander cautioned young drivers aged 18 and above to avoid allowing youthful exuberance dictate their conduct on the road.
“They should observe traffic rules and avoid driving competitions. Their actions or inactions can result in fatal consequences,” he added.
Ibitoye also called on FRSC personnel to remain committed, professional, and proactive in ensuring that road users adhere to safety regulations.
“We must all play our part to ensure people drive to stay alive,” he urged.
