Deep Cover has been an incredibly successful release for Prime Video so far. The movie has gotten great reviews overall, currently holding a 91% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes. One of the positive reviews came from ScreenRant‘s Ben Sherlock, who gave Deep Cover 6 out of 10 stars and praised the performances from the leading trio. The film has also done well on the streaming charts, making the Top 10 on Prime Video just days after its June 12 release date.
One of the most well-liked elements of Deep Cover is the originality of its storyline. The movie is a buddy comedy action film wherein three improv actors are asked to go undercover in London’s criminal underworld. Playing this leading trio are Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom, and Nick Mohammed, who star alongside a supporting cast that includes Sean Bean, Paddy Considine, Ian McShane, and Sonoya Mizuno. While the film is pretty unique in its premise, there are several films similar to it that Deep Cover fans could really enjoy.

It also uses its ensemble as the main narrative driver of the film. It is not as funny as Deep Cover, but its capers are lighthearted and never really raise the stakes to any concerning degree. This makes Fountain of Youth a good family-friendly alternative for those interested in more lighthearted action.

The crime comedy genre is essential to Deep Cover, but another key element is its improv. Don’t Think Twice is a 2016 movie that heavily focuses on the New York City improv scene. Starring Keegan-Michael Key in the lead role of Jack, the film focuses on the fallout of what happens when one member of an improv troupe gets a big break. The film’s cast also includes Mike Birbiglia, who directed and wrote the movie, Gillian Jacobs, Tami Sagher, Kate Micucci, and Chris Gethard.
Deep Cover does poke fun at some concepts of improv, connecting it to the core trio’s work. Don’t Think Twice is not nearly as satirical when it relates to portraying improv itself, as the film is based more strictly within its world. Seven Psychopaths (2012)

While he has swung more dramatic with movies like Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Martin McDonagh is a master of crime comedy. Seven Psychopaths tells the story of a screenwriter who is accidentally thrust into the crime world in Los Angeles when his friends kidnap a Shih Tzu that belongs to a gangster. Like Deep Cover, Seven Psychopaths features a quality ensemble including Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson, Christopher Walken, Michael Pitt, and Michael Stuhlbarg.
While the screenwriting world is distinct from that of improv comedy, the movie is also about someone from the art world getting wrapped up in crime. Like Deep Cover, this premise leads to some hilarious moments as the protagonist is a bit unprepared for what is to come. Seven Psychopaths combines this premise with some great performances, making for a quality watch.

It continues the story of Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck), a math whiz who acts as an accountant for dangerous people. Chicken Run: Dawn Of The Nugget (2023)

All three of the leads are great in Deep Cover, but Mohammed is a particular standout. Frequenting television parts in the early portion of his career before scoring his biggest breakout part in Ted Lasso in 2020, he does not have that many movie parts. He did, however, have a voice acting role in Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget.
Not only is this Chicken Run sequel a good chance to hear another strong performance from Mohammed, but it actually aligns well with the comedy style of Deep Cover. The film sees a group of chickens break into a poultry farm to stop atrocities from happening. It is not quite as strong as the first movie, but it is a great one to check out for fans of Mohammed who may be looking for a family-friendly alternative.

While it slightly underwhelmed at the box office at the time of its release, making just $71 million worldwide on a $50 million budget, the film got positive reviews and continues to be well-regarded. It features Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling as an odd pairing of private investigators looking into the case of a missing girl and the death of a porn star.

Much like Deep Cover, The Grand Budapest Hotel has caper and crime elements. It is not about comedians, but it is stocked up with comedic actors, giving it a similar vibe. As is typical of Anderson’s films, it is far more stylized than something like Deep Cover, but nonetheless an enjoyable ride.

It is hard to talk about the buddy comedy and crime comedy genres without at least mentioning Edgar Wright. The second movie in the director’s Cornetto Trilogy, the film is a parody action film about an intense police sergeant who is transferred to a village wherein the officers are far too relaxed for his liking, which soon comes to a head as brutal murders start occurring. Like Deep Cover, the stakes are sometimes high in Hot Fuzz, but it maintains its laughs.
The films are also similar in that they take place, at least in part, in London. This gives both movies a distinctly British sense of humor that contributes to their tone. There are other Wright films that have these qualities, but Hot Fuzz is probably the best place to start for Deep Cover enjoyers.

Before Seven Psychopaths, McDonagh made In Bruges, a movie that would go on to become one of his most revered works. It focuses on a small ensemble, primarily working with the leading duo of Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson. The movie is truly a crime comedy at its finest, serving as an example for many films to come.
While Deep Cover takes a lighter tone, it ultimately has a similar energy to this McDonagh film. In Bruges is influential enough on the crime comedy genre that it could very well have impacted Prime Video’s new movie. Whether it did directly or not, it is a well-acted, genuinely funny film that is worth a watch after Deep Cover.
