Senator Orji Kalu, the Senator representing Abia North Senatorial District and former Governor of Abia State, has aligned with the state governor, Alex Otti’s energy vision for Abia by establishing a solar panel manufacturing factory in the state.
The factory, Igbere Renewable Energy Nigeria Ltd, is located in Igbere, Bende Local Government Area of Abia State — the senator’s hometown. It is expected to commence full operations by April 2026, with the ambition of becoming Nigeria’s foremost hub for the production of high-quality solar panels and components.
Addressing guests at the foundation ceremony, Senator Kalu emphasized the importance of investing in sustainable technologies that will secure the future of energy, create jobs, and foster local economic development.
“This project is not just about producing solar panels. It is about generating hope, creating jobs, and contributing meaningfully to Nigeria’s transition to clean energy,” Kalu stated.
“Our people deserve access to sustainable infrastructure and economic opportunities. With this factory, we are building both.”
The solar factory, once completed, is projected to boost Nigeria’s capacity to meet its rising energy demands through renewable sources, reduce dependency on fossil fuels, and provide jobs to thousands within and beyond the region.
Prominent businessman and industrialist Chief Nnanna Ukaegbu lauded the senator for consistently championing economic development through personal and public sector investments in Abia State.
“Senator Kalu remains the only politician with the highest volume of personal investments in Abia,” Ukaegbu declared.
“From this solar factory to Sun Heaven Hotel in Umuahia, the cashew processing plant in Igbere, a metal conversion factory, a paper conversion plant in Aba, Sun FM radio stations in Igbere and Aba, and an ongoing university project — these are monumental strides.”
He described the solar factory as a “game changer” for communities such as Igbere, Alayi, Item, and Abiriba, adding that it would promote industrialization and bring long-term benefits to Abia North and the state at large.
“Senator Kalu is not just representing the people; he is redefining what it means to lead through action,” Ukaegbu added.
Meanwhile, the Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL), the apex socio-political youth organization in the South East, has also commended Senator Kalu for what it described as a “visionary and transformative” project.
In a statement signed by its President General, Comrade Goodluck Ibem, the group described the factory as the first of its kind in the two regions, hailing it as a landmark achievement in the journey toward sustainable development and energy independence.
“This solar factory marks a significant milestone not only for Abia but for the entire South East and South South regions,” the statement read.
“It reflects a shift towards clean energy, job creation, and economic diversification. Senator Kalu has once again demonstrated leadership that aligns with the needs of the people.”
COSEYL emphasized the far-reaching benefits of the initiative, including improved livelihood for locals, enhanced access to power, and a boost to regional infrastructure.
“We applaud Senator Kalu for his unwavering commitment to bringing investments home. This project signifies hope and progress for Abia North and beyond,” the group stated.
“As operations begin, we anticipate more investments and development across sectors. We urge other leaders to emulate this forward-thinking approach.”
The factory is expected to attract local and international partnerships and catalyze innovation in solar technology, making Abia a strategic player in Africa’s clean energy economy.
