In The Bear season 4’s finale episode, Carmy and Sydney finally unearthed what had been eating at them both. The episode, which was set entirely in The Bear’s back alley, was intense, especially when Richie joined the discussion. That said, the finale’s major reveal came when Carmy revealed to Sydney that he intended to leave The Bear in the hope of finding himself outside the culinary world. Despite helping lead the restaurant and his previous success as a chef, Carmy realized he no longer loved the career.
With Carmy’s plan to leave, that also meant that he would no longer have a stake in ownership, bringing another major change to The Bear’s dynamic.
Sydney was understandably upset when she learned of Carmy’s decision to leave what they had built together. In some ways, she felt betrayed by the decision, but it also led to her being open about her consideration of joining Adam’s new restaurant, which Carmy knew about. He also recognized that she would be better at leading The Bear’s team, as she had been known to take a less chaotic approach to her role compared to Carmy.

With Carmy wanting to move on from The Bear, many viewers will certainly wonder if Jeremy Allen White is planning to exit the Hulu series. While there’s no confirmation about the star’s future on the series, especially without any updates on The Bear season 5’s chances, it’s unlikely White will leave The Bear after season 4. Not only is White one of the show’s leading characters, but the actor has also garnered several prestigious awards for his performance of Carmy thus far. Hulu surely wouldn’t want to let White go from the current winning formula.
On the other hand, White’s star has been on the rise since working on The Bear. After appearing in the critically acclaimed movie The Iron Claw, White was cast to play Bruce Springsteen in the upcoming biopic titled Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere. He also joined the Star Wars universe and is set to portray Rotta the Hutt in The Mandalorian and Grogu. Carmy Hinted At The Character’s Future
From a story standpoint, Carmy already teased what his role could potentially be like in The Bear season 5. Sydney was adamant about her disapproval of Carmy’s decision to leave The Bear, but Carmy kept reassuring her that he wasn’t abandoning the group during so much uncertainty. Carmy claimed that he would stick around to help The Bear get out of debt before leaving. While a lot of the struggles had been out of their control, Carmy took a lot of the blame for The Bear’s struggles, so he plans to help get them in a better position before leaving.
No matter what happens to The Bear, viewers have followed Carmy’s journey long enough to be completely invested in his next chapter.
As admirable as his choice may be, The Bear might not have any kind of future. Jimmy and the Computer’s countdown clock had officially hit zero. Though the restaurant made a lot of changes to cut costs, they were obviously being stretched thin. Removing Carmy would be a factor, but that would also mean getting rid of an expert-level chef. Luca was only working as a stage for The Bear in season 4, and there was no indication that he would stick around permanently. Conversely, having more Luca wouldn’t be a bad thing since Will Poulter remained a standout guest star in The Bear season 4.
No matter what happens to The Bear, viewers have followed Carmy’s journey long enough to be completely invested in his next chapter. Whether he changes his mind and stays with The Bear or discovers a new career path away from the culinary industry, The Bear season 5 would need to dedicate time to his separate arc. If, for some reason, Carmy and Jeremy Allen White decided to say goodbye for good, there better be an extremely satisfying conclusion for The Bear‘s most tormented character.
