President Bola Tinubu has announced a new scholarship programme for students from the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) to study in Nigerian universities, starting from the next academic session.
Speaking at a joint press conference in Gros Islet on Monday, alongside the Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, Philip J. Pierre, Tinubu said the initiative had already taken off and would be jointly managed by Nigeria and OECS member states.
According to the Nigerian leader, the scholarship scheme is part of a broader effort to deepen ties between Africa and the Caribbean in areas such as education, agriculture, and trade.
“The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States is very close to us in Africa,” Tinubu said.
“We are moving forward to facilitate business and education opportunities, build capacity, and explore other areas like agriculture and food security. We won’t drop the ball.”
He added that discussions are also ongoing to allow visa-free entry for holders of diplomatic and official passports from OECS countries.
Responding to concerns about bureaucratic delays and other challenges, Tinubu played down any roadblocks, saying, “I don’t look at difficulties. I look at problem-solving.
“If we move on a straight line, we get our goal achieved, and there will be no problems.”
In his address, Prime Minister Pierre praised the scholarship offer as a “timely and practical expression of solidarity” between Nigeria and the OECS.
He revealed that both sides also discussed ways to enhance air connectivity, streamline visa processes, and promote tourism between the two regions.
“We’re excited about what this means for our young people,” Pierre said.
“It’s not just about education, it’s about building real, lasting partnerships.”
“We expect students to begin their studies in Nigeria in the next academic year. We have formed a joint committee to address education, trade, and travel issues, and the people-to-people exchange will be key,” Pierre added.
Earlier, President Tinubu addressed a special joint sitting of Saint Lucia’s Parliament, where he outlined his vision for a renewed partnership between Nigeria and the Caribbean bloc.
