Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has set the tone for a high-stakes night in Spain, warning his players to expect a fierce battle when they face Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final at 8 p.m. later tonight, April 29.
The Gunners travel to Madrid buoyed by a narrow 1-0 win over Newcastle United in the Premier League last weekend, a result that kept momentum alive ahead of their biggest European test in years.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Arteta made clear he expects a bruising encounter against a side renowned for its resilience and continental pedigree.
“A really tough match. They are a team that has so much experience in the competition, and they have every right to be here, because what they have done is remarkable,” he said.
“We know the difficulty of the match, but I think we have shown in Europe, in any ground, what we are capable of.
“We have been very consistent, and tomorrow we have to play with that confidence, with that desire and that will, to come here to win the game.”
Arteta also outlined how Arsenal intend to handle Diego Simeone’s side tactically, stressing the need for urgency and bravery.
He said, “Understanding what’s happening at the moment, how they’re activated and what makes them tick.
“We have identified their threats. Tomorrow, we have to be able to test them quickly and not let them pass.
“And above all, we’ve to make sure that we go toe-to-toe with them.”
Arsenal will, however, be without Kai Havertz for the trip due to injury, a blow that narrows Arteta’s attacking options for the crucial first leg.
