The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has ordered the dismissal and prosecution of officers involved in the fatal shooting of a civilian in Effurun, Delta State, reaffirming the Nigeria Police Force’s zero-tolerance stance on extrajudicial actions.
The victim, Mene Ogidi, was shot on April 26, 2026, in an incident that sparked public concern and prompted immediate intervention from the police high command.
According to a statement issued by the spokesman of the Nigeria Police Force, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the IGP directed that all officers connected to the incident be withdrawn from Delta State Command and transferred to Force Headquarters, Abuja, for an expedited disciplinary process.
Following the review by the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC), findings established that the principal officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, acted in gross violation of Force Order 237, which governs the use of firearms by police personnel.
The committee concluded that the officer’s actions were unlawful, unprofessional and a breach of the duty to protect life and uphold the law.
Based on the recommendations of the committee, the IGP approved the immediate dismissal of Usman and other officers found culpable, forwarding the decision to the Police Service Commission for ratification in line with due process.
The police chief further directed that upon completion of administrative procedures, the affected officers be handed over to appropriate judicial authorities for prosecution over their roles in the extrajudicial killing.
Reiterating the Force’s position, the IGP stressed that no police officer has the right to take life outside the provisions of the law, warning that any violation would attract strict disciplinary and legal consequences.
He described the incident as a betrayal of the oath of office and assured that justice would be pursued without compromise.
The IGP also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, acknowledging their loss and assuring them that the matter would be handled with seriousness and transparency.
He emphasised that the Force remains committed to ensuring that justice is not only served but seen to be served, as part of efforts to reinforce accountability and restore public confidence.
Members of the public were urged to remain calm and law-abiding, while the police leadership assured that mechanisms are in place to uphold discipline, professionalism and the protection of citizens’ rights.
The Effurun incident has further drawn attention to concerns over police conduct in Nigeria, with authorities insisting that decisive action in this case demonstrates a renewed commitment to accountability within the Force.
