Nigeria’s Supreme Court has nullified the national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held in Ibadan, Oyo State, in November 2025, dealing a significant blow to the party’s internal processes.

In a split decision delivered on Thursday, three out of five justices ruled that the convention was invalid, citing a violation of an existing court order.
Delivering the lead judgment, Stephen Adah held that the faction which conducted the convention acted in breach of a subsisting order issued by a Federal High Court restraining the exercise.
The apex court further ruled that the appeal brought by the Tanimu Turaki-led faction lacked merit and could not stand in law.
The convention, which took place on November 15 and 16, 2025, had been a subject of intense legal dispute within the party, reflecting ongoing leadership tensions.
Although full details of the implications are still emerging, the ruling is expected to have far-reaching consequences for the PDP’s structure and preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
