The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has strongly condemned the fatal shooting of a suspect, Mene Ogidi, by a police officer in Effurun, Delta State.
The incident occurred on April 26, 2026, when operatives from the Effurun Area Command responded to intelligence about the suspect, who was apprehended by members of a transport union at Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele Expressway while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.
While efforts were being made to take the 28-year-old suspect into lawful custody, the team leader, ASP Nuhu Usman, allegedly discharged his firearm in clear violation of police regulations and Force Order 237, resulting in the suspect’s death.
In a swift reaction, the IGP directed the immediate transfer of ASP Nuhu Usman and his team to Force Headquarters in Abuja, where they will face the Force Disciplinary Committee for summary disciplinary action and possible prosecution.
The Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon, who conveyed the IGP’s position, stated that the Nigeria Police Force maintains zero tolerance for extrajudicial killings, abuse of authority, and any conduct that erodes public trust.
The IGP extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured them that justice would be served in accordance with the law.
He also urged members of the public to remain calm as the disciplinary and legal processes are carried out.
