Tragedy has struck the National Youth Service Corps community after a corps member, Lovina Bamaiyi Ajegena, died just days after arriving at the NYSC orientation camp in Maiduguri, Borno State. The young corps member reportedly fell seriously ill shortly after registration and later passed away despite efforts to save her.
Lovina Ajegena was said to have arrived at the Maiduguri orientation camp with other prospective corps members full of hope for the service year ahead. Sadly, that journey ended in sorrow after she reportedly became ill a few days into the programme.

A fellow corps member, Augustine Pamela, who shared her story online, said they first met while booking transport to the camp and later discovered they had been posted to the same location.
According to Pamela, they completed registration together and were assigned the same room and bunk, making many people believe they had known each other before camp.
She explained that Lovina’s health worsened six days into the exercise, and both of them eventually ended up in the hospital after she also became sick.
Pamela said she stood by Lovina, helping her eat, taking her to the bathroom and staying awake through the night to comfort her.
“She always thanked me, even while in pain,” she wrote.
Lovina reportedly died on April 27, 2026, at about 7:03 a.m., leaving friends and colleagues devastated.
Her death has triggered mourning on social media, with many Nigerians praying for her family and calling for improved healthcare support in NYSC camps nationwide.
