Obafemi Hamzat (born September 19, 1964) is a Nigerian politician who has served as the deputy governor of Lagos State since 2019.

He was born in Lagos into the family of the Late Oba Mufutau Olatunji Hamzat and the Late Alhaja Kehinde Hamzat of Iga Egbe, Lagos. His father, the late Oba Mufutau Olatunji Hamzat, was a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly and the state’s Commissioner for Transportation from 1979 to 1983, before serving as the Vice-Chairman (South West) of the Alliance for Democracy.

Through his maternal royal heritage, he rose to the position of Action Congress leader in Lagos West Senatorial District and was anointed king.

Obafemi Hamzat Education

He attended Odu-Abore Memorial Primary School in Mushin, Lagos State, Nigeria, and Olivet Baptist High School in Oyo, in Nigeria’s south-west region. He received a degree in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Ibadan in 1986, followed by a master’s degree in the same discipline in 1988. In 1992, he received his PhD in System Process Engineering from Cranfield University in England.

Career

He worked with RTP Consulting Services, Columbia University, Merrill Lynch Inc., Morgan Stanley, and Oando Plc. He was Oando Plc’s Chief Information Officer and Group Head IT Strategist.

Dr. Hamzat was appointed Commissioner for Science and Technology in August 2005, under Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s term. He kept his position when Governor Babatunde Fashola took office in 2007.

During his term as Commissioner for Science and Technology, Dr. Hamzat encouraged the use of contemporary technology in the state’s ministries, transforming the face of data and record keeping in Lagos while also eliminating the tendency of state ghost labour.

The office had gone without a commissioner during Fashola’s first four years (after Rauf Aregbesola’s appointment), with only a Special Adviser.

In carrying out his mandate, Dr. Hamzat’s ministry executed various critical projects for Lagos State during the megacity era.

Hamzat was appointed Special Adviser on Works to the Honourable Minister of Works, Power, and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, in 2015. In September 2018, he resigned to run in the Lagos state gubernatorial election.

After a protracted primary, Dr. Hamzat emerged as Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s running mate, after stepping down during the primaries. Sanwo-Olu would eventually become the party’s nominee, and then the Governor-Elect.

Both men ran a campaign across the state. The Independent National Electoral Commission declared Dr. Hamzat as Deputy Governor-Elect of Lagos State and issued him a Certificate of Return on March 10, 2019, following the election.

Dr. Hamzat received the fifth Lagos State Man of the Year award in September 2013.
