The Delta State Police Command has arrested a police officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, over the killing of a 28-year-old suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State.
Confirming the development in a statement on Tuesday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, stated that the incident occurred on Sunday when operatives attached to the Area Command, Effurun, acted on intelligence from members of the public.
According to him, the deceased was apprehended while attempting to waybill a parcel said to contain a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition.
Edafe added that operatives were deployed to the scene to take the suspect into custody.
However, the officer leading the team allegedly discharged his firearm in violation of Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure of the Nigeria Police Force, leading to the suspect’s death.
“The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, has condemned in strong terms the extrajudicial killing of a suspect, one Mene Ogidi, aged 28 years, which occurred on 26th April 2026 in Effurun, Delta State.
“The unfortunate incident occurred when operatives attached to Area Command Effurun received credible intelligence from members of the public regarding the deceased, who was reportedly apprehended while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition.
“Police operatives were promptly deployed to the scene to take the suspect into custody. However, the police officer leading the team, ASP Nuhu Usman, in clear violation of Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure of the Nigeria Police Force, discharged his firearm, leading to the death of the suspect,” the statement partly read.
He added that the Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, had condemned the killing.
He also noted that the CP immediately ordered the arrest of the officer and his transfer to the State Headquarters in Asaba for disciplinary action.
“The officer has been queried and subsequently transferred to the Force Headquarters, Abuja, where he will appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee for immediate disciplinary sanction and prosecution,” the statement added.
Edafe noted that the command maintained zero tolerance for extra-judicial actions and reiterated its commitment to professionalism, accountability and respect for human rights.
He said the CP also extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured them that justice would be served.
The police urged members of the public to remain calm, adding that necessary steps were being taken to ensure the officer responsible was brought to justice.
