Senate announces vacancy for Ondo South senatorial seat
INEC directed to conduct by-election within 30 days
Move follows Jimoh Ibrahim’s reported diplomatic appointment
The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has declared the seat of Ondo South Senatorial District vacant, paving the way for a fresh by-election.
The announcement was made during plenary on Tuesday at the National Assembly, Abuja, where lawmakers deliberated on the development.

According to Akpabio, the decision followed the appointment of the former occupant of the seat, Jimoh Ibrahim, as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, a move that necessitated his exit from the Senate.

The Senate President subsequently directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to organise a by-election within 30 days, in line with constitutional provisions governing legislative vacancies.
He also instructed the Clerk to the National Assembly to formally communicate the Senate’s resolution to INEC for immediate action.
The development sets the stage for a political contest in Ondo State, as parties prepare to vie for the vacant senatorial seat.
