FCT Minister Nyesom Wike declared on Thursday that the Peoples Democratic Party has emerged united following a Supreme Court ruling that dismissed all appeals challenging the legitimacy of the party’s convention and current leadership.
Speaking at a press conference at his Guzape residence in Abuja, Wike said the apex court’s judgment had finally extinguished disputes over rival leadership structures that had plagued the party.
“Today, the Supreme Court has brought to an end the so-called factions of the PDP. There is no more faction in the party. There is only one PDP,” he said.
He explained that the court upheld earlier rulings from lower courts, invalidating all claims to parallel structures within the party. He also dismissed suggestions that the court affirmed the suspension of PDP National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, saying that issue was not before the court.
Wike described those who defected during the crisis as political liabilities rather than assets, while leaving the door open for others who left out of uncertainty to return now that the matter had been settled.
On opposition coalition talks, the minister ruled out any alliance driven purely by anti-government sentiment. “We do not believe in opposition for opposition’s sake. Our approach is constructive, not destructive,” he said.
He urged all political actors to operate within the law and seek judicial redress when aggrieved, and maintained that the PDP remained Nigeria’s foremost opposition platform.
“The PDP is stable, united and ready to play its role effectively. What has happened today is a victory for the rule of law and internal democracy,” Wike added.
