President Bola Tinubu has appointed Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu as Nigeria’s new Minister of Foreign Affairs, following the resignation of Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, who stepped down to pursue political ambitions ahead of the 2027 elections.
The appointment, announced on Wednesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s diplomatic leadership as the administration seeks to strengthen its foreign policy direction.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu, who previously served as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, is expected to assume full leadership of the ministry, bringing continuity and experience to Nigeria’s international engagements.
In a related development, Tinubu has nominated Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, subject to confirmation by the Senate.
Until his nomination, Enikanolaiye served as Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and International Relations. A career diplomat, he has over three decades of service in Nigeria’s foreign service and has held several strategic positions, including Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
His diplomatic experience spans multiple international postings, including Addis Ababa, Belgrade, Ottawa, London and New Delhi, positions that have shaped his expertise in multilateral and bilateral relations.
The presidency said the appointments are part of broader efforts to reposition Nigeria’s foreign policy architecture to enhance efficiency, deepen strategic engagement and strengthen global partnerships.
Tinubu charged the appointees to promote Nigeria’s national interest, advance economic diplomacy and foster regional stability, while also prioritising the welfare of Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora.
The reshuffle comes at a time when Nigeria is seeking to expand its influence on the global stage, navigate evolving geopolitical dynamics and attract foreign investment to support economic growth.
