Tinubu endorses Hamzat as APC consensus candidate for Lagos 2027 governorship race

  • Bola Tinubu backs Obafemi Hamzat for Lagos governorship ticket

  • Governance Advisory Council and Sanwo-Olu had earlier endorsed Hamzat

  • APC consensus strategy strengthens ahead of 2027 elections

President Bola Tinubu has endorsed Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as the All Progressives Congress (APC) consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election, further consolidating political support within the ruling party in the state.

The endorsement, made in Abuja on Wednesday, comes after earlier backing from the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the apex decision-making body of the APC in Lagos State, which had unanimously adopted Hamzat following a meeting at Lagos House, Marina.

According to party sources, key Lagos political leaders, including Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, had met with Tinubu to formally present Hamzat’s candidacy and seek his approval ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Sanwo-Olu had previously described his deputy as “competent and deeply familiar with the workings of government,” openly endorsing him as a successor, a move that helped solidify internal party alignment.

Political analysts say the development reflects the APC’s longstanding consensus-driven approach in Lagos politics, where decisions by influential blocs such as the GAC and top state actors often shape final nominations.

Hamzat, a trained engineer and technocrat, has served as deputy governor since 2019 and has been closely involved in policy execution under Sanwo-Olu’s administration. His political profile rose significantly in 2018 when he stepped down from the governorship race and later became the deputy governor candidate on a united APC ticket.

With endorsements now aligned from the state leadership, the GAC and the presidency, Hamzat is seen as strongly positioned ahead of the party’s primaries.
