The Nigerian Senate has announced Senator Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo (Gombe North, PDP) as the new Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), replacing Senator Aliyu Ahmed Wadada following his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
TheTimes Nigeria reports that the development was confirmed during plenary, in line with the Senate’s tradition of appointing a member of the opposition party to head the Public Accounts Committee.
In a statement issued by his spokesman, Malam Farouk Yarma, the Senate said the appointment forms part of efforts to reinforce its oversight responsibilities and improve accountability in the management of public funds.
Yarma noted that the committee plays a critical role in scrutinising government expenditures and audit reports.
Dankwambo, a former Governor of Gombe State and ex-Accountant-General of the Federation, is widely regarded as an expert in public finance.
“His extensive experience in public finance, taxation, forensic accounting, and governance is expected to significantly improve the committee’s effectiveness in executing its mandate,” Yarma said.
Before his new role, Dankwambo served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Drugs and Narcotics.
Yarma described his appointment as a strategic move aimed at strengthening accountability mechanisms within the National Assembly.
According to the statement, the lawmaker has reiterated the Senate’s commitment to promoting transparency and responsible governance through its committee system.
Yarma added that such adjustments are necessary to sustain public trust in democratic institutions.
