A fire incident has destroyed a residential building in Lomu community, Umunze, in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The fire, which broke out at about 2 pm on Thursday, started in one of the apartments and spread to adjoining rooms before it was brought under control.
Residents and passers-by were said to have made efforts to contain the blaze before the arrival of firefighters.
No casualty was recorded, but several properties were destroyed in the incident.
Eyewitnesses attributed the fire to a possible power surge following the restoration of electricity in the area.
“We made frantic efforts to put out the fire, but it spread rapidly with thick smoke before the arrival of the state firefighters, who battled for some hours before quenching the fire,” a resident said.
Confirming the incident, the Anambra State Fire Service said its personnel responded to a distress call and contained the fire, preventing it from spreading to nearby buildings.
A statement by the service’s Head, Media and Publicity Unit, Chukwudi Chiketa, said the fire affected the main building within the compound but did not extend to surrounding structures.
Chiketa said, “The Anambra State Fire Service attended to a fire incident that occurred on Thursday, 2026, at Lomu Village, Umunze, Orumba South Local Government Area.
“The service received a distress call at 1448 hours, and firefighters from the Anambra State Fire Service responded promptly, arriving at the scene.”
According to the statement, preliminary findings indicate that the fire was caused by a power surge linked to an electrical fault.
The agency advised residents to ensure proper electrical installations and the use of surge protectors to prevent similar incidents.
