Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir-Yusuf, took swift action in response to serious allegations regarding the mismanagement of workers’ funds. During the Workers’ Day celebrations, Governor Yusuf ordered an immediate investigation into claims that N1.5 billion had been deducted from workers’ salaries by Abdullahi Musa, the former Head of Service in Kano.
The allegations were raised by Kabiru Inuwa, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Kano. Inuwa’s remarks during the event sparked the Governor’s call for an inquiry into the financial mishandling.
Governor Yusuf emphasized his commitment to ensuring that any individuals involved would face strong repercussions, stating that the funds must be returned to the rightful owners. “Upon hearing of these allegations, I immediately instructed the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Umar Faruq-Ibrahim, to establish a committee to investigate the matter thoroughly,” said Governor Yusuf.
Yusuf also reassured the public that the government would take decisive actions against any guilty parties and prioritize the recovery of the funds.
The Governor’s response follows a series of reforms aimed at improving the welfare of civil servants in Kano. He revealed that his administration has cleared N32 billion of the N48 billion backlog in gratuity and death benefits inherited from previous governments. Yusuf committed to settling the remaining N16 billion before his tenure concludes.
In addition to addressing financial mismanagement, Governor Yusuf’s administration has made efforts to improve the lives of retirees. The state government has increased the minimum pension from N5,000 to N20,000, significantly benefiting retirees and their families.
Furthermore, Governor Yusuf announced the establishment of the Local Government Service Commission, a move designed to align the careers of local government employees with national standards, providing better professional opportunities for them.
The NLC Chairman, Kabiru Inuwa, welcomed these developments but also reiterated his call for an investigation into the alleged N1.5 billion misappropriation. Inuwa further urged the state government to address discrepancies between local and state government workers’ salaries to foster a sense of fairness and equality.
As the investigation unfolds, Governor Yusuf’s commitment to transparency and worker welfare stands as a key focus of his administration.
