Babajide Sanwo-Olu announces ₦50,000 wage award for May
Move targets rising cost of living, fuel price pressures in Lagos State
Government highlights housing, transport reforms to ease workers’ burden
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved a ₦50,000 wage award for public sector workers in Lagos State as part of efforts to cushion the impact of current economic challenges.
The announcement was made during the 2026 International Workers’ Day celebration held at Mobolaji Johnson Arena, where the governor was represented by his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat.

Sanwo-Olu said the additional payment would apply for the month of May, acknowledging the financial strain caused by rising living costs and fuel prices.
“For the month of May, Lagos State Government has approved an additional N50,000 for all workers. We are aware of prevailing economic challenges… This decision is to support our workforce during this period,” he said.
The governor praised workers for their role in sustaining the state’s growth, describing them as the backbone of Lagos’ economy.

“Lagos is not great because of its government. It is great because of its workers… who keep the system functioning,” he added.
He also addressed key concerns affecting workers, particularly housing and transportation, noting that the government is expanding affordable housing schemes and rail infrastructure to ease commuting challenges.
“When workers cannot afford to live close to their place of work, it creates a serious difficulty… that is why we are investing in affordable housing,” he explained.
Sanwo-Olu further assured that pension payments remain consistent and pledged continued engagement with labour unions to improve workers’ welfare.
Earlier, the Head of Service, Bode Agoro, emphasised that a motivated workforce is critical to effective service delivery and sustainable development in the state.
