Abdulsalami, Jonathan, Others Attend State Police Dialogue

The former president Goodluck Jonathan, retired Catholic archbishop John Onaiyekan, and former military head of state Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, rtd, are currently discussing state policing.

The conversation, arranged by the Office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, marks the start of discussions on Federal Republic of Nigeria Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2023 (Establishment of State Police), which is supported by 13 other lawmakers and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu.

By decentralising the police, the bill aims to strengthen law enforcement and public safety in Nigeria.

The bill’s proposal establishes a constitutional framework for states that choose to create and continue their law enforcement agencies, in addition to providing state police in addition to federal police.

The bill “aims to clarify the scope of the powers and responsibilities of the federal and state police, and to provide for their funding and oversight,” according to Kalu, the chair of the House Constitution Review Committee.
