According to former President Goodluck Jonathan, state police are an absolute necessity for Nigeria and should not be negotiable.
Former President Jonathan (2010–2015) stated that the focus of the discussion needs to change to guarding against governor abuse.
He made this claim on Monday during the House of Representatives’ ongoing discussion on state police.
He claimed that although most of the time governors misuse institutions, the difficulties are too great to prevent the establishment of state police.

The former president claimed that the 2014 Confab delegates enthusiastically embraced state police.
“We can only end kidnapping and other forms of insecurity through the creation of state police,” Mr Jonathan said.
Mr. Jonathan’s position runs counter to that of Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, who was against the creation of state police.
The Deputy Speaker of the House, Ben Kalu, had earlier stated in his opening remarks that a multilayer approach to insecurity is necessary given the state of security in Nigeria today.
He claimed that more than N5 billion had been paid in ransom to kidnappers—a statistic that glaringly reveals the startling expansion of this illegal industry in the nation.
