Incident highlights worsening insecurity on Zamfara highways
A former commissioner in Zamfara State, Sheikh Abdullahi Mafara, has been shot by suspected bandits while travelling to a political meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The attack occurred on Saturday along the route from Talata Mafara to Gusau, when armed assailants opened fire on his vehicle as he was heading to the party meeting.

According to security commentator Bakatsine, who shared details on X, the former commissioner narrowly escaped death during the assault.
He said: “SAD NEWS: Yesterday afternoon, Sheikh Abdullahi Maharazu Mafara, a prominent cleric, former LGA chairman, and former Commissioner for Religious Affairs narrowly escaped an attack when bandits opened fire on his vehicle en route from Talata Mafara to Gusau for an APC meeting in Zamfara State.”
Bakatsine added that Mafara sustained a gunshot wound to the leg, noting that the bullet was later removed and he is currently recovering at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH).
Mafara is said to be receiving treatment and is in stable condition after the incident.
The attack has renewed concerns over persistent insecurity in Zamfara State, where major highways continue to witness frequent assaults by armed groups, despite ongoing security operations.
