Trump addressed reporters hours after the event, revealing that an armed suspect charged a security checkpoint before being stopped by the United States Secret Service.
According to the president, the man was carrying multiple weapons and posed a serious threat before officers quickly subdued him.
Trump said: “A man with multiple weapons charged the checkpoint and was taken down.”
He described the suspect as a “very sick person” and a “thug.”
The president also confirmed that one Secret Service officer was shot during the confrontation but survived because he was wearing protective gear.
Trump stated: “He was saved by his bulletproof vest and is doing great.”
The security scare happened late Saturday during the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton, forcing the evacuation of top officials, journalists, and invited guests.
Authorities later identified the suspect as Cole Allen, 31, who is expected to face multiple criminal charges.
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said the suspect could be charged with use of a firearm during a violent crime and assault on a federal officer.
She said: “This individual was intent on doing as much harm as possible.”
When asked if he believed he was the intended target, Trump replied cautiously: “I guess.”
Reflecting on the dangers of public office, Trump said leadership carries serious risks.
He said: “I can’t imagine any profession that’s more dangerous.”
Despite the incident, Trump insisted it would not affect his decisions or leadership.
The latest security scare adds to growing concerns about political violence in the United States, especially after the 2024 campaign rally shooting in Pennsylvania where Trump was injured.
