In a heated exchange on social media, Nigerian commentator Daniel Regha has criticised activist and lawyer Deji Adeyanju over his recent comments on electricity supply in the country.
The debate followed Adeyanju’s appearance on the Honest Bunch Podcast, where he shared his views on what Nigerians truly expect from power supply and affordability.
Regha blasts Adeyanju’s position on electricity
Daniel Regha strongly rejected Adeyanju’s argument, describing it as misleading and out of touch with ordinary Nigerians.
Regha said, “Deji Adeyanju is proof that some youths are no different from our present leaders. What a rubb’sh argument. Nigerians need 24/7 electricity 100%, and will be able to afford it if the govt made affordability possible.”
He added, “He’s talking about people needing light from 8pm to 7am for basic comfort, what about those who rely on electricity heavily to run their buinesses. A lot of products including food items are overly expensive due to high production cost, and electricity contributes to it.”
Regha further argued that electricity should not be treated as a privilege.
“In a serious country, electricity won’t be divided into bands and won’t be luxury, provision of light is a social amenity.”
He also criticised Adeyanju personally, saying, “This is coming from a supposed laywer, but no surprises; Someone that couldn’t even bail his client in times of trouble.”
Adeyanju defends Nigerians’ electricity expectations
On the podcast, Deji Adeyanju argued that Nigerians are not necessarily demanding full 24-hour power supply, but rather reliable electricity during key hours of the day.
He stated, “Nigerians don’t even want 24 hours light, can they even afford 24 hours light? Nigerians just want to come home at 8pm and meet light so they won’t sweat when they sleep and also meet the light by 7am so they can iron their clothes and then you can take the light and divert it to where factories are.”
Adeyanju further insisted that citizens are easy to satisfy when it comes to electricity needs.
“Nigerians are not asking for much and they’re the easiest people to please. How can this be too much?” he asked.
