IGP approves disciplinary action as case moves to prosecution stage
The Nigeria Police Force has ordered the dismissal and prosecution of officers involved in the fatal shooting of a civilian, Mr Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State.
The decision follows the conclusion of internal disciplinary proceedings into the incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, and sparked public outrage over alleged abuse of power and excessive use of force.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Force confirmed that the affected officers were immediately withdrawn from Delta State and moved to Abuja for investigation.
According to the report, the directive was issued by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, who ordered an expedited review through the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC).
The committee found that the principal officer involved, ASP Nuhu Usman, breached Force Order 237, which governs the use of firearms, describing his conduct as “unlawful and unprofessional” and a serious violation of duty to protect life.

Based on the findings, the committee recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP Usman and other officers found culpable.
The Inspector-General approved the recommendations and forwarded them to the Police Service Commission for final ratification.
The Force further stated that, upon completion of administrative processes, the officers will be handed over for prosecution over their roles in what has been described as an extrajudicial killing.
Reaffirming its stance, the Police leadership stressed its zero-tolerance policy for abuse of power, warning that no officer has the authority to take life outside the provisions of the law.
The statement also conveyed condolences to the family of the deceased, with assurances that justice would be pursued transparently to restore public confidence in policing.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid, urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding as investigations and legal processes continue.
