President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Mr Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe as Nigeria’s new Minister of Power, following the resignation of Mr Adebayo Adelabu, who stepped down to pursue elective office.
The nomination was announced in a statement on Thursday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who confirmed that the name has been forwarded to the Senate for screening and confirmation.

Tegbe, an economist and former KPMG Africa senior partner, is expected to take over the power portfolio at a time the federal government is intensifying reforms in the electricity sector.

A native of Oyo State, Tegbe previously served as Director-General and Global Liaison for the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership, where he coordinated bilateral development efforts aligned with the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).
He also spent over 35 years in advisory and governance roles across public and private sectors, leading fiscal policy and institutional reform initiatives, particularly during his time at KPMG Africa.
According to the presidency, the nomination is aimed at strengthening ongoing reforms in electricity generation, transmission and distribution, while improving grid stability and attracting investment under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“Tegbe is expected to leverage his extensive expertise to advance critical reforms and deliver improved outcomes for Nigerians in the power sector,” the statement noted.
The development comes as the federal government continues to reposition the sector amid persistent challenges, including inadequate power supply and infrastructure gaps.
