Two people lost their lives, while five others were injured in a multi-vehicle collision at Obere along the Ota-Idiroko Road in Ogun State.
PUNCH Metro learnt from a telephone conversation with the spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, on Tuesday that the accident occurred in the early hours of the day.
According to Akinbiyi, the crash occurred after a truck rammed into other vehicles along the expressway.
The impact of the collision was said to have resulted in the death of two victims and injuries to five others.
He noted that the five vehicles involved in the accident included a white MAN Diesel truck with number plate EKY 918 YC, an ash Suzuki minibus with number plate AGL 81 YF, a yellow Suzuki minibus with number plate LND 928 YD, a yellow TVS tricycle with number plate AGL 781 QP, and another yellow TVS tricycle with number plate AAA 300 QV.
“According to an eyewitness, the RTA/RTC was caused by loss of control, as the driver had fallen asleep at the wheel, coupled with excessive speeding.
“Twenty-one people, including nine males and 12 females, were involved; five people, including two males and three females, were injured, while two males died.
“TRACE operatives and other sister agencies managed traffic while the injured were rescued and rushed to the hospital by FRSC. Also, the deceased were deposited at General Hospital, Ilaro,” Akinbiyi added.
He noted that the accident vehicles were handed over to the police for further investigation.
Road crashes have remained a recurring challenge across major highways in Ogun State, particularly along busy corridors linking Lagos and neighbouring states.
Findings by traffic authorities have consistently attributed most of the incidents to human factors such as speeding, fatigue, and loss of control.
In a similar incident reported in November 2024, no fewer than 22 travellers narrowly escaped death in a crash along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway after a truck driver reportedly lost control and rammed into a commercial bus, leaving several persons injured.
Likewise, recent reports indicate that fatal crashes involving trucks and commercial vehicles continue to claim lives in the state, with speed violations and reckless driving identified as major contributing factors in many of the accidents recorded across Ogun.
